i took my car out for a drive today since it was so nice out, and when i stopped in a parking lot i noticed a smell of antifreeze so i checked under the car and saw a little puddle. i thought it may have already been there so i drove to another spot and checked again, only this time i popped the hood and saw some dripping from underneath the water pump. its weird because it ran its normal temp the whole time and when i took it home i looked again and it wasnt dripping anything. i obviously couldnt check the radiator level but last time i checked about a week ago it was full, and the resevoir was full today. wtf's goin on?> anybody else ever had this happen? if i need a new water pump, should i invest in one of the mezeire electric pumps or would it be better for me just to get one from NAPA since i work there?

 

Were is the leak coming from Left, center or right. If it's coming from where the water pump bolts to the block I'd have to say gaskets. If it's coming from the middle I would have to say you have a frozen/ broken pump bearing and you would need a new one. The bearings went out on mine and made a huge coolant mess after a week of driving. Then the fun part came when the coolant screwed up the opti and I had to replace that also. good luck

 

Check the weep hole on the bottom of the waterpump. You should be able to tell if it has been leaking. Also, did you have a tough time steering here and there? If so, yes, the pump is leaking and it is leaking on the serpentine belt causing slippage resulting in the loss of power steering. Check the top of the engine near the throttle body and the underside of the hood and see if you have visual signs of coolant. This is also caused by the belt slinging the coolant all over.

 

when i looked under the hood with it running, the first thing i saw was coolant on the crank pully so i immediately took it home. i guess it had all drained out when i got home (12 miles or so) cause it wasnt dripping anymore. i checked the radiator 3 hours later and didnt see anything in it at all but the resevoir said full. btw, yes about 3 days ago i was in a parking lot and it was like my power steering went out, but when i came out a few hours later it ran fine. one more quick question...ive been using green prestone antifreeze in my car, and a buddy of mine has a 97 lt1 and he said he used orange i beleive. i hope, and im quite sure, that im using the correct coolant? anybody know if theres a difference between coolant requirements for 93 and 97 lt1s. thanks guys

 

If the water pump leaks...when does it leak, only when running or when at temp or all the time?

its been parked for a week now and i looked under it the other day and it was still dripping, so it leaks all the time now. i just bought a new pump for it from work for 80 bucks so hopefully it will be fixed sometime this week.

 

Ok, cause I dont observe mine but I see rust spots on it.
