my new problem (drivetrain)

ok im trying to put in a new clutch (spec stage III) and my flywheel is bad and ive looked everywhere for one but cant seem to find one and am about to give up and spend a lot on an after market flywheel and im wondering if a new one will throw of my balancing

this is what i was told qoute:
the lt1 is balanced as an assembly (crank, harmonic damper, and flywheel) if you put in someone elses flywheel it might no be balanced to your motor

so if i get a new flywheel will i need to replace the other items
crank harmonic damper etc.???

Sorry couldn't resist.

Harmonic dampener: No. They have no balance.

Flywheel: Stock flywheel should be balanced to stock flywheel, if you found a stock one you SHOULD be OK...

When it's balanced, it's also balanced with the weight of the pistons/rings/rods/bearings/piston pin/locks BTW.

It's just got weights on them and not the actual parts.

so if i put in an aftermarket flywheel i can just put it in along with the new clutch and not have any problems with balancing and wont need to replace anything else

Do you have a factory bottom end?

If so, I'm not sure how good the QC is on balancing them...

But, what I'd do is see if there's a machine shop in the area that can possibly balance match the 2 flywheels...

If not just bolt the sucker up.

If it's an LT1 specific flywheel it ought to be pretty damn close. Probably closer than the stocker

When building a new engine though, I see best to balance the engine WITHOUT the harmonic dampener. Get that balanced to ZERO seperately. That way if it ever needs replaced you can just replace it with another zero-balancer dampener and not worry about upsetting the balance of your rotating assembly.
