is my engine running too cold after 160stat?

i did headers, lt4km, !egr, !air, and added a 160stat, with programming from pcmforless.

now my car is running very cold

to give you an idea............todays temps outside, 89*/ feels like 98* according to weather.com

however........when stopped at a light, with max ac on..........my engine only gets up to 170* at MOST, and 160* when driving.

in the evenings when i drive, it stays below the 160* bottom hash mark as if the car was off.

i know running too cold will decrease performance

i kept my stock thermostat, should i put this back in?

i also have a low idle now.....550............could this be related to running too cold?

you should be fine, your car will hve more performance, but it will use a little more fuel due to emissions taking longer to warm up.

I did the same thing you did. Got headers, full exhaust, 160* t-stat, and pcmforless chip for my 93. Same thing, car runs really cold even in hot weather. But trust me, the performance is there. Hopefully your fuel mileage won't suffer like mine did. I was barely getting 200 miles per tank on the highway.

LMAO

I think that a little tuning should take care of it. I'm not worried about it now. Dyno tune after h/c install hopefully this week.

My mechanic advised against me buying a 160 stat.

His reasoning was that the car was designed by GM to function at an optimal temperature (not too hot and not too cold) and that any operation outside of this range would be detrimental to daily driving and also to performance. According to him a cooler engine will not necessarily perform better, it's the temperature of the air flowing through the engine (cooler) that will improve performance.

The reason I had this little talk with him was that I went in recently to flush my radiator because my car would run pretty hot sometimes when i was stuck in traffic during hot and humid days, but now that I've read about other people having the same experiences, i think it was pretty normal. Nevertheless i was way overdue to flush my radiator, so i guess it was a good thing. My mechanic also advised that I change my thermostat along with the radiator flush, because he thinks that the bad coolant passing through the Tstat could have affected its operation.

So i ordered a 160 stat as well as a manual fan switch despite what my mechanic said... But now im a bit worried, i mean is the gas mileage really that bad? and does it really cause your engine to go that cold?

you will be fine as long as the o2 sensors heat up it will go into closed loop and a cooler engine will perform better than a hot one

also, with the coolant running through the engine, the gas and air inside cylinders will be denser allowing for slightly more compression and more power that way.

My car runs about 170* all the time, unless im sitting with the a/c on. I wish it would run colder, the performance is night and day. I can run .1-.15 quicker if I can keep my car cool at the track.
