my chances against a 2003 mustang gt?

Well my friend just bought a 2003 mustang gt. He says he should smoke me. We haven't raced yet because he still has to break in his engine and i'm still trying to fix my misfire issue. What do you think the results of a race would be if each driver were good drivers. If he would win what mods do you think i would need to be able to win. My car is basically stock right now.

If your car is running right you have a 25hp advantage that is assuming the GTs are still rated at 260hp.

I think it will be close, but I think you be able to pull it off if you are a better driver. This won't be that interesting if your car is running like crap when you race though......

Drew's got it right. Don't talk too much smack, but show him who's boss.
Oh yeah, remember, it costs those shetland pony owners half of what it costs us for any mod.

get a cutout installed. should cost about $60 for the cutout and to have it welded in. and it is a pretty proven 15hp gain over stock muffler

and it's not quiet either

Do you really need to ask? Hope you can hook up good. Blow the tires off and he might get you. Assuming the car is running fine of course. Have fun!

96-97 came stock 285hp, they freed up some ponies with the different exhaust. As for mods, for starters, do a catback like Borla, then a CAI (ColdAirIntake) like Moroso or K&N and you will really wake up your car. There are tons of "free-mods" we call em that you can also do, like removing your MAF screen, lower stat, etc, etc.

Does your friend have a stock stang. Does he realize he is gonna loose. Maybe he just wants to see by how much, so he knows not to race one on the road.

Well I wouldn't be so quick to jump on the "LT1 is gonna kick his tail" bandwagon...I raced a bullit the other day and won, but from my reading they are pretty dang quick. They're running high 13's at 100ish to 101, keep in mind they weigh in a just less than 3300lbs. That means he will have a weight advantage so those 25hp pretty much disappear. Not to mention those stangs are probably slightly under rated, actual power is probably 270ish or so...I think if you out drive him you'll win (assuming you car is running good) he out drives you, he'll win...it's a dang close race in my opinion...

THats assuming it's a 5 speed, if he's got an auto you'll beat him...

Minus the misfire issue, you should take him. The real trick is coming off the line without spinning. Even more fun is if your friend bought a convertible GT. If so, walk your friend around to the front of your car and point at the nose of your car and say "if you want to see the nose of my car, you better look now because all you'll be seeing later is its a$$".

I added a cutout and WS6 CAI to my '96 TA and *most* of the time (i.e. a good launch) I can edge out stock pre-'03 Cobra 'stangs in the 1/4.

I have not seen a newer GT run slower than a 14.4 at the track. Last time there were 2 newer GT's running 14.1's with one having a 3.73 gear and the other with a catback.

I put my money on a newer GT, auto or M5 unless your **** be tuned and running properly.

Edit - the 2 newer GT's were auto's also.

As mentioned if your car is running right, as in good plugs, wires etc you should take him. If everythings running right and you want to be sure to beat him I would add a CAI, you can get a brand name one used for as little as $100 from the board or you can make your own for around $50 according to a lot of people. That is an easy 15hp. That along with a cutout for $50 and another 15hp and you almost certainly take him.

I have had it out with every 99+ Mustang GT and Bullit in town.

Score: Firebird 10 / Mustang 1

The guy who beat me didn't have a speed limiter, we raced from a 60 roll I was walking him good then I hit 115mph.

He was like " I told you these cars have high end power ".

Then I told him about my limiter.

Well, it is an ify situations. If you hook up and he doesn't you will win. If you hook up and he does too, it will be close. If you don't hook up and he does you will lose. My brother has an '02 GT with shaker intake, pulleys, xpipe with borla, 4.10's and about $2500 in suspension work...not to mention 275/40/17's. The first time we raced I didn't hook up and he beat me by 1 car. From 20 I beat him by two. When I hooked up I beat him by 1/2. The newer mustangs are pretty fast, but when they are stock, they aren't all that. If you really want to do some damage to him get some DR's, cai, LT's, and a catback or cutout, and maybe a gear and it will take him a while to catch up Stock for stock, as long as you can lauch well, I would go with the LT1, but don't get anxious and just hammer it and lose it. Good luck. Put that pony back in the corral where it needs to stay!!!

Ford over rates their HP for whatever reason, it's actually closer to 265 or so from what I've heard for years. Same with their Saleen, Cobra, etc. On the other hand GM under rates their HP.
