my cam selection...
my cam selection...
I've been doing tons of research. Now I'm looking for opinoins on a few different cams. My lt1 has a stock bottom end, new bearings and rings. I don't want to be spinning it too high to make good power. My heads are iron, I will be cleaning them up a little, but no major porting is planned., probably bigger valves.
Cams I'm trying to decide between:
847
cc306
224/230.
Some seem to say these are too big for stock heads, but from what I've been reading with a good tun they will be fine.
I'm not to worried about idle, I'm looking for a nice lope, car is also a manual. My main concern is keeping some low end torque.
Rear end gears are 3:73's.
I'm impressed with some numbers I'm seeing with the 847, but I'm wondering what your opinoins are of that cam for my application.
Any other cams you think I should have a look at, let me know!!
Thanks, Matt

Re: my cam selection...
I would figure out exactly what work you are going to do on your heads so you can have a idea how good they will flow. Then call comp and have them custom grind one. Best way to make power is have a cam cut for your application
Re: my cam selection...
You mention not wanting to spin too high, what do you consider too high?
I consider both the cc306 and GM847 to be pushing that envelope for a stock bottom end car. If you have your mind set on an off the shelf cam, I would personally suggest the XE230/236 with a good valvetrain setup. If you are willing to get more power for a little more money, contact a custom cam grinder (ex. Bret Bauer) and they will take care of everything from there.
Just my $0.03 having recently been in your shoes.

Re: my cam selection...
The CC306 makes great high end power, but the duration on it makes it a little hard on lower rpms. For a stock bottom end and a cam that you don't want to spin high, I'd do something in the 23x/23x range on a 110 or 112 LSA.
Otherwise, I'd stick something like a CC306 or larger and spin it to 6500+
