My 94 Z (A4) 4L60E is acting up..need advise
Ok now im pissed...This is the 2nd tranny and this one only lasted 40K..This is whats happening..under half to full throttle out of first it'll stick and slip and search for second gear for like 2 seconds and then pop me in (not a good felling pop) then same with second but a little smoother. I am going to AAMco tommarrow and getting a diagnosis. (how much do u think it should be)? Also if i do need a rebuild what should i put in there performance wise so that this one doesnt go in 40 K again? tranny cooler etcc....please give me some suggestions on a solid rebuild for my POS 4L60E.
Take it to the dealer and have it scanned first!! Amco thinks everything needs a rebuild!! I may just be a sensor in the trans or maybe some dirt in the valve body=lot less then rebuild..
Just my $0.02!!

You need a scantool and some logging. Drive around for a while while logging. If it "acts up" do something like turn on the cruise or turn the a/c on or off. The, when you examine your logs to see what the hell happened, you can "fast forward" to when the a/c compressor gets a request (or the cruise controle gets activated). This is a very quick way to hone in on when it screwed up.
I spent a LOT of time looking at my logs and fixed two different issues two different times:
1. A defective 2-3 solenoid (That didn;t take more than 5 seconds of staring at logs though --- the DTC error was instantaneous). Cost me $17 in parts to fix + a tranny filter/fluid change.
2. A mis-adjusted/defective TCC/Brake Switch. This little f**ker took forever to pinpoint because it worked sporatically. $12 later, and 15 minutes of crawling under the dash, she now shifts like a brand new tranny and doesn't feel like it's "slipping" anymore.
Remember, a scantool is about $100 for the wire, and the software is free (For the first 20 or so logs)
Tranny labor is around $70/hr.............
