Must protect my wires!
Must protect my wires!
I just put pacesetteer LT's on my car. They fit great and pose no clearance issues except for two areas on the passenger side.
1. They are too close to the wire bundle that runs down the side of the strut tower! These are the O2 sensor, PCM ground, and starter wires.
2. Also, there is another individual wire that passes right next to the headers about 4 inches closer to the firewall(knock sensor, abs...?).
I want to reroute these wires so that they are AWAY from this hot area, because they WILL melt eventually.
I searched and found people that had done this, but they didn't go into much detail.
For those that have done this: what type of wire did you use, and how did you splice it(soldering, crimping...) I noticed that not all of the wires are the same gauge. It seems like there should be some sort of how-to on this, seeing as how so many of us have headers.. Thanks

Re: Must protect my wires!
I'm aware that splicing the wires that come with the o2 sensor is dodgy b/c the wire is part of the functionality of the sensor, and is not a normal copper wire. But, the wires running up the side of the engine bay look like normal copper wire. I know this may be a stupid question, but I really am not an electronics brain.
-If I solder in similar gauge copper wire, and use heat shrink to seal it up-will I run into any problems with increasing the resistance in the wires that may lead to problems?
-Is there anything special about these wires, or can I use generic copper wire?
I hate to even mess with ANY electrical connections in the car, but they really look like they need to be moved.

Re: Must protect my wires!
i was worried about those wires too. they should have heat wrap on them already. i doubled that up with some header wrap. the big bundle does lightly touch the primary, but so far it's been 8 months and it's just now started to burn through the header wrap. i thought about moving it around too, but it looks like a nightmare. if i had known in advance, i would have done something about it before the header install, there is no room whatsoever to mess around down there now.
the other wire (also should be heat wrapped) isnt even close to a primary and should be fine.
i have had no problems, unless the 4 wires getting heated up is causing my crappy gas mileage (unlikely). if you move them successfully away from the header, please post up your results. i worry about those wires too, sometimes. then i just floor it and say "go america!".

Hope this gives you some help.http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...p&N=4294923290
Re: Must protect my wires!
heat wrap will help but I only wrapped my brake lines on the drivers side and the fuel lines underneath cause I run true duals.
Now what I am about to tell you has to be done with the manifolds out but the headers not yet in. This will give you room to work.
I have done all these things with no ill effects and my 160K stock internal LT1 ran 13.4s at 104.
Those wires running down the side of the shock tower really need to be moved in my opinion, I simply bought the same guage wire down at the autozone and spliced in the length I needed. This is a ground wire and your starter wires and knock sensor if i remember correctly, I extended them with regular old butt splices taking my time and making sure it was a nice tight splice, wrapped them with electrical tape and then convoluted tubing and routed them forward in front of the headers and then down close to the passenger side motor mount ( I aint afraid of the zip tie you see) hook em back up and your good.
The other cable like wire is going to your ABS sensor one on each side of the car, mine had enough slack in em to allow rerouting with no splices but its tight. They rub on my AGX shocks so eventually it will go bad but it will take awhile and you may have more slack than I did and can zip tie em somewhere.
The cruise control cable needs to be addressed as well but this is an easy fix, simply route it behind the heat shield thats protecting your brake lines on the drivers side. By the way on my car that heat shield was touching the #1 primary so I removed the heat shield and massaged it a bit with ye old hammer.
I made my own O2 extensions with copper wire, its worked fine for me but I think I will purchase extensions next time.
I have 26K on my setup with Jet Hot coated Hooker LTs and ZERO problems. I attribute this to special attention to detail I payed while doing the install.
Good Luck

Re: Must protect my wires!
Thanks, I'll feel better when it's done. I love the headers, but hate to do anything to the car in a way that may leave me stranded in the future. I think I can squeeze around enough with my skinny arms to do this with the headers on. If I take off the starter and disconnect the ground, starter and O2 wires, I can pull the whole bundle up to the top. Then I shall splice away, and reroute. Zip ties all the way! Any other experiences with doing this...?
