Mufflex 4" and Global West Traclink... no good :(

Hey guys,

Worked some on the 96SS this weekend. Went to finish it up yesterday but was disappointed when the Mufflex 4" y-pipe (mates up with Hooker long tubes) would not anywhere near come close to fitting with the Global West Traclink kit I have on the car.

So, I have a couple options... go back to a stock torque arm or find an aftermarket one.

To go back to a stock torque arm I'm going to have to buy about $75 worth of "bracketry" and accessories because all mine has been removed and I don't have the old factory parts. But, before I spend this much money on factory stuff, I'd rather get an aftermarket item... if one exists.

I've done some searching here and see that Spohn supposedly made one about 6 months ago but when going to their site they only mention a version for the 3" Mufflex. It looks completely different than my setup and one unacceptable "feature" is that it goes UNDER the Mufflex y-pipe which currently is already the lowest point under the car. Having something going under this isn't going to work for me

Yesterday I test fitted the IRS torque arm too and it interferes in a different area. ARGGH!!!

Any ideas? Any company make one of these torque arms for 4" Mufflex guys?

Thanks!

You should go with a 3" true dual setup. The shop
that did my 2.5" did a 3" system a while back for
a guy with long tubes as well. The tricky part is that
you need to go over each side of the axle rather
than on the pass side. It takes adjustment of the
fuel lines. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion but the car is on the lift right now with an entire Mufflex system sitting right next to it. So, I'll need to use that rather than fabbing up a custom exhaust.

Have you seen a Mufflex 4" exhaust used with these or are you just suggesting I call them and see if they can help? Thanks!

the BMR Xtreme duty swaybar and trackpac both have xmembers that go under the 4" mufflex y Pipe. I have the Mufflex Y and the 4" transition is right above the BMR x member, but i believe it does sit slightly higher then the spohn.

Thanks for the info RacinLT1. I'll look into that one as well but ideally I'm trying to find one that does NOT go under the Mufflex. That just kills ground clearance if you know what I mean and I have to have at least one daily driver. LOL!

On a side note, I've found my old clamshell type torque arm tranny mount. It came in a box of "stock" stuff when I bought my 96SS (already had the Traclink installed). However, since I didn't take this off, I don't know what it should look like and the parts books don't show this in enough detail. My question is, if you look at the below picture you'll see that two of the mounting locations have rubber mounts... the third one... the one on the top and to the right in the picture, does not. I can't tell by looking at the tranny if there is supposed to be one or not? The area in the picture where there is no "dirt" is about the same size as where it would mount to on the tranny so can't tell if there is supposed to be a rubbing "washer" here as well or not? If you are familiar with this, please let me know asap as I'm out working on it now thanks!

UPDATE: I had a brilliant idea to jack up my other M6 and crawl under there to see what it looked like. No rubber washer so I'm good to go

This setup is made to work with a 4 inch mufflex and a 3 inch Muffley Y PIPE, and long tubes. It is what I have. They said it will work.

Thanks David! I've spoken to them today about that torque arm and it just sacrifices too much ground clearance for my everyday car

I have the stock torque arm installed right now so at least I can drive the car

I've got a 4" exhaust system on my 94Z with a BMR torque arm and cross member, but the exhaust was custom made. It also has a Eibach drag launch kit and other goodies that keep it very low to the ground. My collectors are the first thing to hit (Hooker long tubes) on my 2" lowered front end.

I just called BMR and talked to them about their torque arms. Looks like their full length torque arm is the one that'll work for me. He said that one is good to the 10s in the 1/4 mile. Faster than that he said I'd need the Extreme Duty shorter torque arm.

I currently don't think the car will run faster than 10s in the 1/4 even after my upgrade plans so I should be good to go.

Thanks guys!

The area under the y portion of the y-pipe is almost the lowest point. I believe the lowest point is the driver side header and y-pipe portion. But, when you put anything UNDER the Mufflex system, it then becomes the lowest point. I just took a bunch of pictures. If anyone is interested, I'll upload them to show the clearance differences.

Brent, check out the wolfe racecraft arm. Definately a tough bar, and it goes above the exhaust.
