motor is gone....what now?
motor is gone....what now?
My motor is gone, should I pull it myself? or take it and have it done? I can't rebuild it myself, but should I have 1 shop do it all, or is having steps done at different shops a more cost effective way of approaching it? Just curious on your approach if you had this problem, and didnt really have the knowledge to do it ALL your self. Pulling the motor, i can do, breaking it down, i can do, but putting it all back together... dont think so.
Re: motor is gone....what now?
Believe me, you can do this.
I actually just got done pulling my shortblock this afternoon. Label things, put them in zip-loc bags, keep them in a big tub (I used one of those big Rubber made ones), label wires, take pics for reference, and so forth.
I've never pulled an engine before so I didn't set any speed records, but it actually went relatively quick (IMO) and was very straight forward. This book may help: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=1955114
As for the short block itself, I bought one already assembled because I couldn't find a shop locally that I was comfortable with. They were either filthy or the people there didn't strike me as having much of a clue.
If you find a good shop around you, let them get the parts. They typically get better prices than you can.
Quite a few people on here have been happy with Golen if you just want a ready to go short block, they have some great prices if you don't need forged everything too.

Re: motor is gone....what now?
You know, I don't really have a specific goal to be honest. I've never even been to a track, I just do this for fun.
I got 326 SAE rwhp with my last setup (not too shabby for an auto - that was with an XE 224/230) and it was fun, but I didn't trust my 120k mile stocker and I wanted more power. So.. Here I am with a forged shortblock, LE2 heads/cam/intake, and severely limited time
Hopefully it'll be running by spring.
