motor beat, rebuilt cost vs crate?

my engine is making some nasty sounds, I'm willing to bet a spun bearing or some other bottom end failure.

I took off the valve covers, all the springs and rockers look good, and I pulled half the pushrods and made sure they weren't bent. So far so good, I'll finish that later. I checked all the other simple stuff as well. I'm going to readjust all the rockers and start the car up, if it still has problems, it's beyond what I want to fix myself.

So, this leaves me at this point. I'm just a backyard mechanic type and don't have the means/tools/know how to pull the engine and rebuild it myself. So, I think I have 2 choices.

1) get a mechanic to rebuild my motor and install some performance internals(give it some pep over stock).

OR

2) order a crate motor and have that dropped in. The crate I want costs around $5400.

What is the going rate for an engine rebuild, and the cost of getting an engine removed/installed?? I figure with a crate the mechanic will not have to touch the motor itself, so the labor would be alot less then having the mechanic rebuild it. What do you guys think?

Thanks, I'm just trying to decide what to do.

Brian

I think a rebuilt bored 355 would make more power then that crate. When I got quoted on an engine swamp in a v6 mustang it was near 8-10 hours of work prolly at whatever rate of the mechanic, like 80/hour so somewhere near 1,000 I would say not too sure tho. Thats just in labor tho. Rebuilding and boreing to 355 (requires a bore anyways) Im not sure at all on that price but If I had to say prolly 2,000-2,500

thanks for the info.

It's only money right??

I'm shooting for 400rwhp NA thru my 12 bolt. I'll do some research.
