Personally I don't think Redline is worth $8 a quart. Used to use Mobil 1 but wanted something better.

I like Amsoil. I think the base stocks are superior to Mobil 1. A lot of guys on here would disagree with me, however I used to have crappy oil pressure with Mobil 1 and now it is great; also the engine seems smoother. It is only a little more expensive than Mobil 1 and actually less expensive if you become a preferred customer and get wholesale prices. (And no I'm not a dealer).

If you like dino or blends try Schaeffer's Supreme. Never seen it anywhere but online, do a search in Yahoo or whatever. Good stuff, glowing reports!

IMO mobil 1 is a fine product. Is Redline better? I have no idea. But at $8/ qt. it's a pretty expensive oil change. I watch for Mobil 1 to go on sale in gallon jugs at Wal Mart. 5 qts of Mobil 1 and an oversize Mobil 1 filter (p/n M1-302) is working fine for me.

$8 a quart is insane. Heck, i get mobil 1 and even $4.50 a quart seems like a lot. Mobil 1 is a dang good oil

If you want a really good high quality synthetic motor oil then I suggest Torco although it's expensive and harder to find it's probably one of the best.

I would definitely use Redline or Amsoil over Mobil 1.

Another great choice is the new 0w30 Castrol Syntec from Germany, which is really Formula SLX and is a true synthetic (unlike the made in USA Syntec viscosities). This oil is going in my car in a couple of weeks. It's a very thick 30wt oil, almost a 40wt actually. I have been testing it in my sister's car for a while now, her last oil analysis came up showing this oil to be very good, it holds it's viscosity very well, shows very low bearing wear and retains it's acid neutralizing ability very well for longer drains. I ran her oil for 5500 miles, and it easily looked like it could go double this interval or more. This oil is designed to go for the very long drain intervals that Europeans use.

Right now it's only found in Autozone in the US, or Walmart in Canada.

Castrol also sells a 5w40 oil which comes from Belgium, but this oil is a bit harder to find, usually it's found in BMW dealers.

why not mobil 1. I have always liked mobil 1 and had good luck with it, as many others have.

I would guess that at a minimum, Mobil 1 is 99.99% as good as any $8.00/qt oil if you don't drive with it in the crankcase to 15,000 miles. Most oils are fine if you don't excessively extend the change intervals. I would rather change the oil twice and sleep better knowing that my oil is clean rather than pay $8.00 a quart for something that I would have to drive 10,000 miles on to even get my money's worth.

Agreed. I would never drive 15,000 miles without an oil change. Its not that hard to do . I usually change mine every 4k or so.

Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 are simply too thin. The LT1 needs a slightly thicker oil to show better wear numbers, something closer to the top end of the 30wt scale or the low end of a 40wt. Because Mobil 1 is too thin, it's High Temperature/High Shear numbers are a lot lower than other synthetic oils. So if you're driving hard with higher oil temps (such as when road racing, or simply when you drive hard for longer periods on the street in the summer) then you'll see more bearing wear.

Patman - This German Castrol.. is there anything on the bottle to differentiate it from the American one? I'm due for a change in a couple of thousand, I'll give it a try (been running M1 10w30 exclusively for the last 50k miles).

You have to look on the back of the label and you'll see it says made in Germany on it. If it says made in USA it's not the same stuff. You'll also see a list of the impressive specs it passes such as BMW Longlife, ACEA A3 and a few of the Mercedes Benz tests.

Here is a thread which shows pics of the labels actually:

What weight oil do you recommend? I am considering purchasing Redline. Thanks in advance.
