miss/pop at top of third on my "new" lt1
miss/pop at top of third on my "new" lt1
Finally took the car out tonight for a REAL rip on the highway. Smooth up top, feels strong, clutch feels great, T56 is great although I missed 3rd twice powershifting, but I think its due to being rusty and mostly due to the SLP shifter. The third gate is really close to first, so I'm natrually used to going slightly more right with my hand for third as per ripper, but do like the slp and would like to get used to it. Did get a couple of good third gear powershift and got rubber every time. Every second gear was great, lol.
It does however have a miss/breakup at high RPM in thrid gear. First and second feel good, but third its starts to miss/pop/brake up above 4500. Could be tuneup, could be fuel but could be opti.
I'm gonna put my MSD coil on when I get a chance and pull the plugs and take a look. A good set of wires would be nice but not really fun to change on a stock non header car. Plus don't want to really until I get the headers in and coated (Hooker LTs and are on the way). Want to go with good over the valvecover wires.
Gonna put the MSD coil, gonna put the fuel pressure gauge on and get the datalogger going and then take it out for a flog and see if I can figure out the problem.
I'd like to say opti, could very well be, but at low rpm/third gear starts and lugging it feels great, and first and second at WOT feels great but its hard to say 'cuase there is less load on the motor then third.
I bought another lt1 being perfectly ready to do the opti, but with my previous opti problems, it acted weird when warm, it would flat out cut out/miss at higher RPMs, but at low RPMs it would run like its missing and you could hear it through the exhaust and you could really feel it when you lug it. This one does not do that.
Car has 60,000 miles and I think is bone stock excpet the Suncoast func. hood/filter assembly and SLP shifter. Wires/plugs/fuel filter could be super old.
What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Igor.
P.S. Forgot to mention, the only abnormality I notice with this car is a strong fuel smell in the dr. side rear wheelwell. I'm think that EVAP canister, but am not sure. Anyone ever seen this?

Re: miss/pop at top of third on my "new" lt1
Ya, the car is mint but the previous owner said he did nothing to it. Said "it needed nothing". So a good tuneup/all filter change is in the need for sure.
I asked for an evap canister filter at a couple of local parts shops, no listings.
How do I service one? Is it a dealer part only?
Thanks guys.

Re: miss/pop at top of third on my "new" lt1
did some searching and can't seem to find what are good plugs/gap to run on a stockish lt1? MIght just do plugs/wires prior to header install as I still have to wait to get the headers, then get them coated... and I work out of town a lot, so, will be a while.
Thanks guys.

I've used AC Delco rapidfires and NGK TR55's v-powers and both worked great!
Re: miss/pop at top of third on my "new" lt1
I've had very little time to play with this car, but here is what I did.
I pulled the #1 plug...looks OK. Its dry (no oil deposits), a little whiteish on the ground strap and a shiny dot on the electrode (AC Delco plug), but otherwise ok. I need to change them all, but am waiting for my LTs to come in and get coated so I can do it all at once.
I also need to remove the EGR and AIR system.
Hooked up a fuel pressure gauge, taped it to the windshield and went for a drive. Seems fine, seems to spike up to near 40 psi at WOT and stay there. Its hard to go to WOT in third gear anywhere in the city here, so will take it out on the highway tommorrow while I run around for work and see what the fuel pressure gauge says, but I think it'll be fine.
So that leaves me with the opti, old plugs and old wires.
What are the symptoms of a bad coil?
Thanks.
