misleading reading and overheating
misleading reading and overheating
Hey everyone, Ive never posted on here before so here goes... Ok I have a 94 z28 6 speed pretty much stock, ok its stock!, but soon not for long.. I just replaced the waterpump (reman.) incl. coolant temp sensor and thermostat 180 deg. stock, optispark (reman), plugs and wires bosch 2's, basic wires. I flushed the radiator etc. everythings good other than a slight exhaust leak around the manifold and this high pitched sqealing sound that gets louder when i rev it. I took it for a test drive and ( still has high pitched noise) when I get on the gas it bogs down and has no power, then overheats (like into the red). So found out fans weren't coming on, tested all relays, fans etc. no problems. Then just bought a actron scanner for OBD 1, No codes came up other than the skip shift (which i unplugged yrs ago). The active readings w/ car running said coolant temp was like 185, and dash temp guage goes into the red, i hear coolant boiling and the car is physically hot, so dash guage seems correct, but pcm is saying its way cooler and fans aren't kicking on because of it.. Im so confused, If anyone has any idea of whats wrong it would be very much appreciated..thanks

Re: misleading reading and overheating
Sounds like you have an air pocket in the cooling system. It's common if the proper filling procedure is not followed (and sometimes, even if it is). Look on my Tech Page for how to drain and refill the system (just the refill portion is what you need).
I don't know if the squealing is your reman waterpump or reman opti. I might suspect the opti, since it is running so poorly. I hope you paid special attention to lining up the indexing grooves correctly when installing. You also need to get that exhaust leak corrected, too.

Thanks alot for your help, your tech page is very informative, the flush and refill procedure's first step was to have the car on a level surface..oops, I had it on the ramps, took it off and added coolant in the refill fixed that problem thanks. The high pitched noise was there before and still there after I changed out the opti and water pump, its seems to be coming from the drivers side around the front part of the engine. Im not sure how the opti spline could be off, since I was very carefull about putting it on right, and it seemed to go on flush, I did it all twice to be sure. I not sure why the scanner isn't telling me anything, the car idles fine then when I gas it, it bogs down, maybe the gas is bad since it was sitting for like 3 plus months. Why wouldn't the scanner throw a code or tell me something if the reman. opti was bad? any suggestions would be very appreciated.
