middle of opti swap. questions!!

94 motor. hotcam, 95+ timing cover, vented opti, HD timing set. the new timing cover seems to have a smaller seal for the water pump driveshaft, or the shaft is too big. do i need a smaller w/p driveshaft? or should i get the seals from the 2 covers swapped out?

common problem?

what if you opened up the seal a little bit so it fits over the shaft?

im just trying not to damage the seal. lubed it up and used a little force but it seems to have a "lip" where the shft just wont fit through. if i take a screwdriver or something and "open it up a bit" ie stretch it, that wont do any bad damage will it?

just being careful

yeah you can try that. i hear that seal it really tight and you can just shave a little off the inside so it will fit over the shaft w/o ripping.

yeah, just went and tried that. spread out the seal little more, and tapped it on but the black ring of the seal came out. the yellow "seal" i uess its called, is still on there tight. so do i just need a new seal now or am i ok? my buddy says the seal is bad now, cuase its the black ring that seals it, but it looks like it'd be a tight seal to me with the yellow ring.

Those WP seals really are crap.. and hard to get right.. I'd say that seal is bad now, yes..
Also, as far as I know it's the same seal and same WP, shaft etc.. on both applications..
Do a search on here there's a few tips on seal install, etc..
I used the shaft coupling, cleaned well, as a tool to install..
Also, I 'flared out/opened up' the black part of the seal, [as I also found it 'too tight'... ] worked OK for me and doesn't leak...
Ruined one seal doing it, too...
In my opinion, that black part stabilizes the coupling, more than it seals it.. [they superceded the OLD seal.. I suspect they were getting ripped and distorted by the shaft 'oscillating' etc]
Best to install the seal after the TC is on, so at least you can leave the TC on..
