Mechanic trying to BS me.

So I took the car to the mechanic, because it's backfiring big time. I currently don;t have a catalityc converter on the car, took it out about 1 month ago, after I took it out the car started having problems. So he tells me that he put a new cat and the car stop backfiring. Is this true? He is charging me 150.00 plus 75.00 for labor.

Not having a Cat will cause backfiring?

Thanks.

Backfire? I don't believe so. It will pop and crackle though.

If you had exhaust leaks at the connections when you removed the cat then you may get some backfiring when you let off the throttle. If its sealed up then you should be fine without a cat.
