mechanic says

Ok so i took my car to the mechanic for some problems and he looked at the engine and saw the cylinder heads were not stock, then he looked at the drivetrain and saw it was made for a corvette. when i bought the car i was not informed of anything of this. i looked up the VIN and found the car was made in Canada and the engine was a 5.7L V8 MPI OHV 12V. i have no clue what the other things after the V8 mean can someone please help. my mechanic said it can be ordered with corvette parts and he said this is like no other camaro he's seen i mean its not much but i would like to know.

Re: mechanic says

MPI should be multi port injection
OHV should be overhead valve
Not sure what the 12V would be. Out of context it would be 12volt. Don't know. I don't know that this is what these mean. To me in car terms, that is what they mean.

I don't know the situation, but it sounds like the mechanic might be nuts.

Re: mechanic says

How about some details Stumpy. What year is your car? The engines in F-bodies and Corvettes have been close to identical (excepting 1992 and 1997 when F-bodies waited an additional year to get the LT1 and LS1) since 1987 or so.

Like Shoebox said, sounds like your mechanic doesn't have both oars in the water. If he hasn't seen a V8 Camaro before, it's definitely time to find a new mechanic.

5.7 Litre V8 cylinder configuration, Multi Port Injection, OverHead Valve, 12v...hmmm....you sure it wasn't 16V? these engines are 16V(valves)(a 4 valve per cylinder 4 cylinder will also have 16 Valve, ect.)

I agree, your mechanic needs help, take the accessories off both motors(vette and F-body), put them side by side, and you would be hard pressed to tell them apart

Hard pressed to tell them apart? You cant tell them appart because there the same engine! the only thing thats diffrent is the block (corvettes have 4 bolt main caps) I think you need a new mechanic who wont screw you. he is going to try to charge you "corvette" prices for a camaro.

Re: mechanic says

The corvette has IRS and the ZF6 so I am not sure what Drive train parts he is talking about? If he is refering to a LT1 and a auto then I would get a diffrent mechanic because the F-body and Y-body use the same parts except the Y-bodys all came with 4 bolt mains and there is no way he could see that and some of the F-bodys came with 4-bolt mains as well anyway. CHEVROLET/CAMARO Z28/5.7L V8 MPI OHV 12V is just an LT1 Camaro. Dave is correct that the corvette fuel rails are diffrent and exit on the Passangers side but why do I get the feeling yours are on the drivers side?

Re: mechanic says

It's a 97 camaro, and i think the only thing is that it has aftermarket heads but, the guy i bought it from didnt tell me so he prob didnt know and i dont think the previous owner did either, so i dont know. when i looked up the carfax it just said 5.7L V8 MPI OHV 12V so i dont know i think the mechanic might be a little nuts but he charges me good prices and it works after so i'll stick with him but he might be a little nuts.

Hey i know this guy! this mechanic guy. when i first got my 97 lt1 i brought to a friends shop. His boss comes out and is like lets what you got their sonny.

so he sees the heads and is like thos arnt stock heads! you got so corvette heads or something on that car. Im like oh tight thats cool how can u tell (i didnt know to much about lt1's when i first got mine) So he runs inside and grabs a magnet, If this doesnt stick to your head then that means its aluminium and is not stock. Since i had owned a LT1 capric with steel heads befor i knew that one of the difrences in the motors where aluminum heads. So i was like naw man all f-bodys came with aluminum heads, he didnt beleave me so i just left it at that.

LOL That's awesome. Be sure to let them work on your car. I guess they are looking for after-market heads with stock everything else. That's better than the dealer that tried to tell me that a Z28 has a "regular old 350" but an SS has a corvette engine. Even my mom knew he was an idiot. It's like, let me get your card so I can never come to you again.

Re: mechanic says

I wonder if some mechanics look at Corvettes and go, "DUDE, you got the Camaro motor, someone ripped you off"
