Manual Switch safe?

Hey guys, Just got my car back from the shop. They had to put in a whole new ignition and cylinder. It seems the previous owner had wired in a second cyl/ignition to bypass a problem with the factory one. I had no idea.. even the shop was baffled. It burned out nearly everything in the steering column and it all had to be rewired. There was even 2 alarms wired in. When I saw the parts I was shocked. Melted plastic and metal are fairly scary. There was a very crappy fan switch bypass hardwired. The fans ran all the time. The shop took all of that out and putit back to stock.

The temps get up to about 240 in traffic then drop down accordingly when the fans come on. I am used to the temps being much cooler and it freaks me out a bit seeing it get that high. I spend about a good hour in bumper to bumper traffic each way. I did a search on here for manual switches but ended up more confused.

I was hoping I could get some advice on purchasing one. I saw the one from SLP for a little more than other brands. It doesn't have fancy fan LED's but seems to be the best quality and easiest to install. Any thoughts? Someone also mentioned that sometimes it still pulls power when the car is off? Drain the bat? I just wnt to rule out any complications before I order one today. Do they harm anything in the long run? hurt the battery even when switched off and the car is off? I just don't want to damage something and I really don't want to try and mod it myself. I appreciate any help in advance.

About the only thing they hurt is you can burn up your fan motors sooner if you run them more often, the only way a fan switch would pull power when the car is off is if you dont wire it to a switched source and accidently leave the fans running with the engine off.

I apperciate the input. As far as the link you provided speedy, Is the ease of installation there? Seems like a much cheaper option.

would this work on 93-97 cars? In applications it looks like its only for pre 92 fbodies. And how does this work?

Ease of install? I am not the most mechanically inclined. I can do easy or basic stuff.

Its a GM performance part, i beleive its plug and play.... it should just plug into your harness, no switches or anything.... it will come with instructions

looks like a much cheaper option. Any preferences with that over a manual switch?

Bad idea with a stock thermostat, the stock thermostat isn't fully open till about 190, so Itl'l come on at 195 and tend to keep the fans on non stop. It would be perfectly fine coupled with a 160 tstat though

So maybe I should spend the extra 20 bucks for a manual switch? the SLP one looks pretty easy.

Depends if you want performance and cooler temperatures spend that extra 20$ on a 160 degree tstat and buy that kit as well.

Buddy of mine says he has a 160 stat for me when he gets back into town. I just have to wait about 3 weeks for a freebie. I might just order the SLP fan switch for now and drop in the tstat when he gets back. I just kind of freak out seeing the temps go so high when in traffic.

240 is normal, tuning would keep it down though I tuned mine and it never goes over 205
