Question making sure 1.7RR's are best bang for stock cam

Just did a bunch of searching trying to compare pro's and con's of running a 1.7RR as opposed to a 1.6RR. My motor for the sake of convo is bone stock. I intend on running these rockers with the stock cam. I'm just double checking with you guys that the 1.7ratio would show the best gains. I realize the upgrading of springs/retainers/etc. is neccessary for this setup and will be taken care of. Otherthan that, the only con of the 1.7's i could find was the inability to run them with a more aggressive cam due to the obvious too high of lift/spring bind issues, etc...is there any other problems, or con's i should be aware of running 1.7's with a stock setup?

So far I've recently done a full rebuild of my rear-end, driveline, and am awaiting the arrival of my built 4L60E w/new TC...for now i'm wanting to run the engine stock, except for these rockers, intake, exhaust, and tuning.

Thanks,

Andrew

For a stock cam they are the best. How much better? I would say maybe 5rwhp. I think your heads start to become a restriction at those lifts numbers. I would go with 1.6RRs NSA that way if you ever decide to do a cam, you wont have to spend an extra $300 for rockers, studs, guiplates and stuff like that. No one can hold out modding for very long

Re: making sure 1.7RR's are best bang for stock cam

1.7's on a stock cam i would say 10-15rwhp
I got 40rwhp since my last dyno with: (285hp 318tw) Bolt-ons(327hp 350tw)
long tube headers
true dual exhaust
1.7RR
Electric WP
Under drive pulley

Headers are a big mod, but the Wp, and pulley are not much, so i figure the 1.7's helped out the rest.

1.7 Scorpion rockers are 202.00
Gm hotcam springs are 30.00
Gm guide plates are 3.00 each( must use gm)
7/16 studds 25.00
Reuse your stock retainer and keeplers
Comp cam pushrods 37.00 harden(Do not buy the $100.00 pushrods, if you mis a gear the pushrod will not bend, thus putting all the stress on the cam and lifter)( I know i have missed a few, till i bought a PRo 5.0 shifter)

NOTE!!!

With 1.6 RR
Some of the 1.6's rockers are wider than others, such as CRANE, if you buy Crane you will have to cut one of the tabs off the inside of your valve cover, otherwise the rocker will rubb . NOw if you buy COMP 1.6 rockers i dont think you will have too, not real sure on this one, because we had already cut the tabs off for the CRANE's

1.7 RR
NOt only will you have to cut the the upper tab off the inside of the valve cover you will have to OUT DENT the valve cover where the rocker adjustment nut is. It is not much but needs to be done. Put the valve cover on (dont put the four bolts in) the car with the rockers already on. Then move the valve cover side to side and up and down, this will leave small marks where you need to OUT DENT. Where you need to out dent is approximently at 10 and 2 oclock from all four of the valve cover bolts.

OUT DENTing- use a 5" 3/8 drive extension and a hammer. Set the valve cover on a 2x4 with a red shop rag,(So you wont scratch the out side of the valve cover.

PICs of an out dented valve cover in my sig PAGE 4

Im not sure if the LT4 valve cover will work but they cost $200.0 ish.

Just bang out your covers and repaint the top with some black spray paint. Mine are flacking off and no one has ever said something about my valve covers. If you realy dont want to its cool, just trying to help out , bang of the $$ racing.

Did you look at the pics, page four??

I just took off my valve cover so you would know what i was talking about.

take another look at my sig page 4

If you take off the valve cover and look inside it.

YOu will see the four bolt holes, coming off each bolt are two support brackets. YOu will have to cut out the upper support bracket.(towards the intake) I used some wire cutters. The supports are triangle, so just cut next to the bolts and next to the edge of the valve cover.

Cut out the long side of the support. With sheet metal snips.

Awesome thanks a lot guys...yeah I'm gonna roll with the 1.7's...out-denting the valve colors looks easy as pie, I was wanting to respray 'em anyways...i'll prolly use ceramic header paint so its oil and gas resistant.

Thanks again.

btw, roadtrip120 your car weight is ...after i get my tranny installed i was planning on gutting the car prior to taking it to the track...but i was shooting for a mere 3200-3400ish weigh in ...

I would personally go with 1.6 rockers. I am taking my 1.7 rockers off of my car when I do my cam swap. Not only are they too big for a cam swap, but they are heavy as ****. I really don't see you getting much of a difference between the 2. I gained 4mph on my last car going to new springs and 1.6 rockers. I gained only 2mph with 1.7 rockers on the current car. BTW, you will not have to dent the covers with either rocker. You will have to cut out one side of the support brace and may have to modify the round part of the bolt guide the fits against the head as it would not fit between my 1.7 rockers.

They are Scorpions. They have about 8k on them and I have a buyer, but have not been able to get them off of my car because my cam parts have not been shipped yet. I am selling them for 170 shipped. If the deal falls through I will let you know. Send me a pm, so that I will have your name if you are interested and the other guy backs out.
