Makeing Custom Cut Bends in Exhaust, Will it Effect Flow?

Well after looking under the car, and doing a bit of thinking for true duals over the axel, I can see where haveing hte pipe PERFECT makes the difference.
Now I dont have, nor do I have access to a mandral bender. but I dot have a cut off saw and a welder.

could I cut wedge shaped pieces from a straight pipe and then weld them together to make a bend? will doing it this way effect flow much? enough to matter anyways?

I was thinking dual 2 3/4 pipes and because of all the welds going over the axel if I do think I would get it powder coated, just to prevent rust as best I can.

would this work without effecting flow much? I know it will take time, but meh, I got lots of it and figure this would be about the best way to make it clear everything wihtout hitting anywhere

Any onther tips would be usefull to.
thanks.

You do realize that you can buy mandrel bent exhaust pipe right?

If you look around the net you can find companies that offer mandrel pipe in different bend angles, 90 degree and 120 degree bends of various radii, just about every angle you'd need to put something together.

If you still want to cut stuff and weld it then by all means yes, it can be done. If the work is clean then there shouldn't be very much restriction at all. You want to keep the bends as gradual as possible.

Good day.

With the mandrel bent duals I thought I had to bend somethinkg out of hte way so they would both fit?
I have an SS so its a bit lower then a Z28 too.
and an aftermarket BHB.
what angle bends will I need then?
too much usuless information on the search for true duals.

Why not just buy some U-bends or J-bends and then cut and paste? There will be fewer joints, and the flow will be better. Gasses will follow about a 10 degree angle change without flow separation. More than that will hinder the flow. That makes lots of pie cuts to get over the axle!

FWIW, I think you'll have a difficult time finding 2-3/4 bends. It's not even a popular straight exhaust tubing size. Two 2-1/2s are probably adequate that far back of the engine where the gasses have cooled and flow is less. Fitting in 3 inch wil be more of a challenge. Unless you are in the 500+ hp range, 3 inch is probably overkill.

My $.02

So keep everything under 10 degree's
I'll try and get the proper mandel bend pipe
And I'll also go with the 2 1/2 pipe, should be good for hte x pipe back?

Thanks
if I do the cut and paste good idea about the universal u and j bends for as much as I can, didnt even think of that.
