Major Newbie questions, but please help a brotha out

Alright, basically i've been saving my money like crazy for the past year, and im finally ready to get a decent car. However, im only 17(18 in like a month), so im worried about insurance on a LT1 Z28. Now, im really new to the whole domestic scene, ive been brought up on DSM's my whole life, but i just want a v8.
So, being a complete newb to domestics, i wanted to know about like a 95 z28 with the 5.7 liter engine, what does it put down stock in the 1/4, whats it HP stock, whats the best things to do to it, etc. Seeing as how im a complete newb, the differences between the LT1 package and the regular z28 would be cool too. Also, id like to know what to expect after you do the basic mods to a 5.7 Liter z28(exaust, intake etc)
Any information you guys could tell me would be sweet, I know nothin about these cars, except that i have wanted one for along time....
Sorry for my ignorance

ok, first off, all z28's are LT1's. If the car is a z28, it has the 5.7 liter engine. No if, ands, or buts about it. Stock HP in 95 was 275. With a decent driver, it should be good for low 14's (normally) at about 98 mph or so. There is alot of variance here, so others may say different. I wont get into the whole modding discussion since there are LOTS of people here who know alot more about that than I do...Just some basic info for ya.

The best first mods are a CAI,headers, cutout or a good cat back. These will get you into the 13's.96-97 have 285 HP because of dual cats and slightly better heads. Later.....

Well, quick clarification:

LT1's were in all Z28's from '93-'97
LS1's were in all Z28's '98+

Earlier Camaro's are an entirely different story. The Z28 / IROC went through a ton of different engines between '67 and '92 (L69, L98, etc. etc.) before GM just narrowed it down to one Z28 engine from '93 on. Just so you have the facts straight.

http://www.f-body.org/tech/ might help you out as far as learning basic stats from model year to model year.

As far as mods go, don't expect a 10-second car just by bolting in a Borla and a cold air intake. Guys on here have gotten down to mid 12's with just bolt-ons.

Also, check out these boards:

LT1-Tech: www.lt1tech.com
Midwestern F-body Association (MFBA): www.mfba.org (messageboard at ubb.mfba.org)
LS1-Tech: www.ls1tech.com

LS1 tech is mostly LS1 stuff, but these guys will help you out with stuff like suspension and drivetrain questions, and there is an LT1 forum on there.

Keep the questions coming

as for your question on insruance. the only thing i can tell you is call up progressive or geico. they will give you a full quote over the phone. you can give them a basic rundown of what the car is going to have: ie ABS, air bag, alarm...etc

that should give you an idea.

the next thing is whether you plan to buy the car outright or finance it. cause you can get away with minimum insurance if you buy it outright. otherwise you'll have to get full coverage = $$$$

for a bit of comparison i bought an 87 iroc when i was 19 (25 now) and had a clear driving record. i only had to get minimum coverage and it was around $800 /yr. now i'm sure it would be more on a newer car and varies depending on state...

like i said, call up a company and get a quote.

as for the mods...all cars respond iin similar ways, with the exception of bigger turbos on the DSM, the rest of it is very similar. cooler freeer flowing air in, and freeer flowing exhaust out, better traction ...etc...

i should have been more specific...I was refering only to 1995 when I made that statement since thats what he said he was looking at...thanks for clearing it up though. Im sure he wants all the info he can get.

of course, I guess you could also make the statement that B4C's are v8's, but not considered a z28....We'll let him get the basic info down before we get into all that though...

Even though they're not as exciting as an exhaust system or a CAI, you should think about getting sub frame connectors. They make a big difference on Camaro's with T-tops.

my 93z which is only rated at like 265 went 13.96@100 with a 2.2 60''. So i guess what it will run will be luck of the drawn on the car. Your basic mods as people have already said are

cai
headers, your choice of shorties, mid length, and long tube
electric water pump
cat back
1.6 rr's
nitrous is a good thing for these cars aslo, as long as it is set up properly.

Just to list a couple weak points of the car. Opti spark, and the stupid 10bolt rear end. You will not be disapointed in the lt1 powerd cars, very fun to drive, and very fun to show people what a set of f-body tail lights look light.
