Main Bearing Cap Wear Marks????
Main Bearing Cap Wear Marks????
I was just looking at my LT-1 engine core that I have and one of the main bearings caps is scored fairly deep. It's almost like the engine was ran without a bearing in place. Can this be cleaned up with a line hone? How in the world can you score one main cap and not the others? I have seen scoring in bearing before but never through the bearing and into the cap and block.
odds are more than likely -depening on your defintion of "fairly deep".. no
A good rule of thumb on a crank is "if you can run your fingernail on it and feel some good grooves, get it turned"
I imagine the same would hold true for a bearing cap. all i know...It would suck to have problems there
edit:
2bolt main caps are cheap- just find somoene who did went upto a 4bolt main

not true at all. a deep scratch in the cap is probably not gonna hurt much, as long as its not very wide, and/or raised up around the area. a light hone would probably do it.
comparing the surface finish of a crank to a main cap is apples and oranges. one is a shaft, one is just a holder for the bearing.

He said it looked likeit was run without a bearing...
All of the wear marks are in just one cap. The part that bolts to the block and also wear marks in the block itself. I looked at it and figured if you honed it and put in a new bearing it would be fine since the cap holds the bearing in place. I have another set of stock two bolt main caps from another engine. Could I use these caps instead, and would I have to have the block align honed? It would at least solve the problem of the grooves in the cap, but not the block portion. Basically, this block is in excellent shape, I am just concerned about the wear since it doesn't make a lot of sense to me how it could happen in just one cap.
