MAF vs. BBK??
MAF vs. BBK??
It's one or the other... what do you think I should do (only have enough funds for one right now)? Go with the Granatelli MAF or do I get the 52mm throttle body for my stock 1997 Camaro SS. I have to decide tonight (on ebay), just wanted some input from others who might have an oppinion.
Thanks for the help.

Neither....
Your current MAF is not restricting anything, take the screen out if you can. Some say it throws a code and makes the car run funny... Me and my buds did it on our 96's and a 95 z28 and they ran just fine.
52mm tb will make the car feel faster because your getting more air with less throttle response.
Those two mods are done after heads and cam installs.
Spend the money on some long tubes. Then you'll feel some serious power gains.

I agree with Zdriver. You should either save some money for something else or go out and buy some headers for the price of those mods. If you are set on one of those, then chose the TB, because that will actually benefit you later on if you plan on doing any more mods. It's not necessary now to have it because you don't need to suck all that air in now. The MAF won't do anything. Your stock MAF is fine and suggest not wasting your money.
Get neither of them...both are absolutely worthless and can actually do more harm than good. Save your 250-300 bucks and get a cutout (30 bucks, 10 hp) and then you have plenty of money left over to buy something really worth your time, like maybe start saving for some headers, or a cam setup, or if you haven't got an intake system yet or an exhaust system yet start by doing that.
What mods do you have on that by the way??

Thanks for the advise... it's much easier to accept words like that when you haven't already made the purchase. At the risk of sounding truely "green"... what is a cut out?
Also, if someone could recommend some headers I'd be all for it!
Right now this SS is completely stock accept for the K&N air filter and the Hypertech program... yeah I know "hypercrap" as so many call it but I had it on my last Z28 and didn't think it was so bad.
Thanks again!

For one thing, I would just ditch the K&N filter and get some sort of cold air kit (K&N, Moroso, SLP, Arizona, etc.). The filter won't really help you out all the much. Or you could just buy a cone K&N filter and some tubing and bellows and hose clamps and make your own cold air kit for around 60 bucks.
The cutout is a piece that welds into your i-pipe of your exhaust. An easy 10 hp out of it for 30 bucks. You can open it and close it with three wingnuts and have open manifolds/headers and close it to return to normal driving. You must be able to stand LOUDNESS with the cutout open though.
I would also invest in some sort of catback or muffler, flowmaster if you are cheap. A lot of people swear by it that flowmaster is total dirt but anything is better than stock and the cutout virtually bypasses the muffler anyways. I LOVE the sound of the flowmaster, but a lot of people will jump on me for that.
Anyways, that is just my two cents on the whole subject.

I'd buy long tubes... and i did..
But if u want some SLP short tube headers I just took mine off and they are for sale. I would buy... well i did buy this set if you want to stay emissions legal and have a header that will last longer than the others... as well as have great performance with the help of larger primaries 1 3/4 vs the others 1 5/8's.
Headers are much more of a pain to install than the throttle body and or MAF (maf is cake).
You'll probably have to pay someone to install a catback.. usually cost 100 bucks. Installed my own cat back but i had to pay someone to line the tips up straight.
Cold air kit the other guy was talking about is a good investment. You'll feel little bit of gain from it. And if u can feel it then its at least 8 wrhp and or torque.

If you don't have to worry about emissions, then definitly go with some long tubes, such as FLP or Hooker. If you want less expensive and emissions legal, then get the MAC's, Edelbrock, or Hooker headers.
One last thing
Thanks for the advise. One last question if anyone's still reading this... if I got some long tubes and wanted to keep the catback system that SLP gave the car when it was born into it's SS glory, can I just bolt them in? I mean can I just remove the existing headers then put in long tubes and marry everything up?
Thanks again

one thing with a larger tb, if you arent using all the airflow, there is a chance for tip in hwsitation. that is when the engine is getting too much air and the throttle response is lost dramaticly. this is not good. id suggest cai and catback or headers and y.
You're headed in the right direction AnniversarySS, get 'er breathing better!
About removing your screen in your MAF (and possibly porting it)--I think I've heard just as many say not to do it as there are people saying they haven't had a problem. I did it and have had no problems--but I think I probably should have left well enough alone. Your stock setup will outflow everything you have right now anyway.

Still use the CAI, the SS etup on ly works well when the vehicle is in motion. Sitting still, the intake and filter is sitting right on top of the engine, and as we know heat is bad. Do the CAI or a cat-back/cutout first that will net better gains.
