MAF home-porting success rate

I'm thinking about breakin out the hacksaw and dremel on the MAF the next time I dig into my car. The screen was removed before I even bought the car 2 1/2 years ago. I need to know how many people have ported them with NO problems, and how many have run into nightmares doing this. The tutorial on www.installuniversity.com looks pretty straightforward. I have LT1 Edit if any changes need to be made, but I'd need to know what to do.

Thanks,
JR

I would leave it alone. You can buy the larger ends, that is what I did. That way you can return it to stock if needed.

Did you see any problems with the new ends? I might just be a reckless bastard and do it anyway

Thanks,

Did you notice any gains from the maf ends?

Don't do it, it screws up the maf tables and makes it difficult to tune.

After porting, my MAF was so inconsistent that I eventually replaced the whole thing with a plastic tube. I can say that I've gotten real good at dialing in VE tables though

I advise against it. By the time you've made an engine where the MAF is a restriction you won't be able to run the stock PCM anyway. Invest your time in tuning the PE tables with LT1_Edit and a wideband O2.

I only ask because I was reading in the Forced Induction forum about how much power you gain by helping the intake before the blower inlet. Eventually I'm getting a solid pipe, but cleaning up the MAF should help too, theoretically. I'm still debating this one...

Personally, if I was blown I would concentrate my efforts into relocating the MAF after the blower. You certainly don't want fueling problems with forced induction

Buttercup - Yeah, I was thinking that, too... I'm going to try to couple the S-trim with the Turbo Tech intercooler this upcoming season. I'm just askin' for trouble. I might be able to work something out where the MAF goes on the cold side (hopefully).
Anyone selling a loud, cool-sounding blow-off valve? 50 bucks

You can do it yourself, but you'd gain probably nothing (maybe some miniscule amount) and it makes tuning a PITA. Sure you can adjust for it but why, and frankly I dont know that I trust its linearity anymore.

Anyhow, I got lucky and found some untouched MAF ends with no sensor for $25, and threw my ported ends away. Nightmare OVER.

This is an example of free mods gone too far. If anyone would like to read my next free mod article, cutting holes in your floorboards - FREE HORSEPOWER, please encourage me to finish typing it up.

Someone who agrees! I wasn't just having problems with linearity but also repeatability. During almost identical conditions I was seeing some frequencies from the MAF that were very different from each other. This is of course from the descreening, which should work fine with a straight shot induction like the RamAirs but didn't agree with my CAI.

I found a straight piece of tubing from a K&N CAI for '93 cars to replace the MAF sensor. It's been a lot of tuning but so far I'm happy with the results of speed density. I feel like I have more direct control over the fueling needs of my cam. Since I had the tools available to run SD I didn't want to lay out the cash for a new MAF.

Cutting holes in the floorboards could lighten up the car though

I ported mine, did it on my old third gen.. Never had a problem. Worth it I doubt it...Advise not doing it.. No...

OK guys, I guess I'll just leave it alone for now... seems like nobody has had any luck with this. Would an LS6 MAF calibrated for an LT1 from www.ls1speed.com work better? I'm trying to squeeze in all the small gains here, you know how every little bit helps!

I have heard that those MAF are not calibrated all that well, although certainly better than a ported stocker. Since you have LT1_Edit I would pick up a regular ZO6 MAF and adjust your tables via LT1_Edit, if you wanted to go that route. The numbers from the stock ZO6 MAF tables are out there for people to do this.
