MAF Do i need it or not?

so would the engine run fine if i just left the MAF off? Would there be any disadvantages to runing without it, gas milage, horsepower, start up? What would the best option be? Mine will continue running when i unplug it but i get the SES light for a week or two. I just knocked out my honey comb from the MAF tonite. Just wondering please post some advice.

You need the MAF. You'd be advised to put the screen back in too.JMHO

Re: MAF Do i need it or not?

Well i got a code a while back saying that there was some sort of MAF malfunction so i unpluged it. Now i have speed density on my car as a backup if the MAF failes so it ran. It ran a little rougher and at times it was a little harder to start, but it ran. I pluged the MAF back in in a few weeks and it has worked ever since. I dont know what that was all about. So if its not working you could use speed density but i would advise that if it does work just leave it alone.

Mine runs fine without the MAF, but then again, I programmed the VE tables for it. Good thing too, it's been unplugged for two weeks now.

Re: MAF Do i need it or not?

I remember reading a post about someone losing 2-3 mpg with the maf out. They broke it and had to drive without it. And also it is wise to leave the honeycomb screen in. It straightens the air so the sensor can read it more accurately, it does NOT hinder the air flow. If it does, then it is so minimal that it would not even matter.

You need it, theres a reason why GM switched from Speed Density over to MAF. It's alot easier to tune and an overall better system IMO. The car will run without it plugged in as a backup in case the MAF fails.
