I just put 987 springs in my Formula without having to touch the heads.

I have read a few times that you can install those springs without the machine work. But, when I talked to Lloyd he said that the heads had to be machined to use them.

Anyone else have any experience with not machining the heads? I want to use these springs.

what cam are you running you may not need the 987s you may could use 986s.

but let me recomend the 612s from cmotorsports.com it comes with seat locks reatiners and springs. that are good to 600 lift.

Re: Machining heads for 987 springs??

The deal with those springs when I put them in my motor was an oversized locator... the metal footing the spring sits on. The springs actually fit without any problem so if Comp or somebody else machined some locators with a slightly smaller outside diameter then the 987s would drop right in. If the same locators that were being supplied with those springs hasnt changed in the past year then you will need to either have the heads seats opened up to accept the 1.5" diameter locator or notch the locator with a cutting tool where it doesnt sit flush on the head.. thats what I did.

Does using these springs and notching the locators make any difference in strength? Is there any cons to using the springs this way?

the spring will still sit on the locator, so i dont see how there would be a problem.

Thanks 97Z I like those 612s. They should be good up to .550 lift right?

Nope, theres no way to hurt the strenght of the locator at all by notching the edges of it. The only way you could run into problems is if you notch them too much so the spring hangs over the edge but if i remember correctly the locators were quite a bit larger in OD than the springs so there was plenty of room.

Another comment I saw is that there shouldnt be a problem as long as the spring sits on the locator... thats incorrect. The spring always sits flush on the locator.. the problem is the locator doesnt sit flush on the head.

true. Assumption was that notching the locator would be enough to make it sit flush on the head.
