Machine Work Question

Just curious how much money am I looking at for Labor for clearancing on the block for a 383? Isn't that the only thing that has to be done for the block to do a 383, is boring and clearing for the rods on the bottom of the block?

Re: Machine Work Question

I think you only have to clearance the block for 6 inch rods, but check with the manufacturer of your rotating assembly. I know i can get my block bored, honed, clearanced and cleaned for $150. But i'd imagine other places are more expensive, this guy will build my shortblock for another 150 . Don't forget to have your oil pan clearanced aswell!!!

Re: Machine Work Question

I had to have my block clearanced for 5.7" (stock) rods when I had my 383 built...I think it ran around $150 or so. Remember to make sure that the rods clear the cam and check the oil pan too...you'll need to ding it in a few places to get enough space.

In this case, rod length has little bearing on block clearance, but rather, rod design will more impact. It really doesn't matter what we believe it will, or think it should cost. The point being, check in your area what shops charge, and accept that. It may vary, based on your location, and proximity to populated areas. It the shop is not familiar with the procedure that is necessary, it is mute.
