Mac vs slp vs jet hot lt's?
Mac vs slp vs jet hot lt's?
I'm trying to decide between the 3 of these headers. I live in cali so i have to worry about emissions. If i get the mac's i'm gonna do the 94-95 style conversion. I'm not sure about the slp's, but i heard that the dual cat style is not much of a gain. So i will probably get the single cat and try to do a conversion. What kind of gains will i see with each of these? And installation wise, which are probably the easiest. If i get the macs or the lt's i'm gonna get jet hot coating. The slp will be ceramic coated. The price range is around the same for each. My main concern is ease of installation, and hp gain. I know the gain on the lt's would be the most, but also probably the hardest to install. Also ground clearance would be an issue also. The mac's are 1 5/8 mid-length's and the slp's are 1 3/4 shories. Which do you think would be a better gain. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.
Since you've got emmissions to consider, SLP's would seem to be the best compromise. I think (you may have to check) that they're certified too. LT's are probably going to be out of the question in your situation. That's not a show stopper though, plenty of folks have made great power with SLP's.
BTW - SLP's are midlength headers, not shorty.

i have the single cat SLP shorties on my car and like them. they do appear to be slightly longer headers.. the collectors reach down further than on other brands. they are also kinda pricey if yo dont get a used set. and if you plan on buying the headers new then you should look into the AS&M headers. they are more of a mid-length header than all the rest.
I would highly recommend the ASM headers, as they are outstanding. However, you're SOL because they do not have a CARB E.O. number. I'd go with SLP or Macs depending on how much you want to build the car. SLP's would probably be better in the higher HP apps due to the 1 3/4 primary design vs. the Mac 1 5/8 primary.
LOL Sean I saw your post so I headed into the LT1 topics
Just for clarification if your looking for an EO smog number the only one that has that is the SLP.
I think for price the MACs are the best, Performance the AS&M until HIGH horsepower then the Longtubes become a better choice.
MACs are easy to install SLP are a PITA OMG they are a PITA, plus when you do plugs unless you have the arms of a 5 year old you might as well get the bandages and beer out.
If the EO number is not a concern get the AS&Ms they'll pass a sniffer.
JMHO

Well all i need is to pass the sniffer. The rest i can get taken care of.
So you think the as&m are the way to go. They don't make them for dual cat cars so i gotta do a conversion. Has anybody done this with these headers. Also what kind of gain would i see with these, and how hard was the install. Thanks.

Isn't the FLP lt's emission legal? Those would be the way to go.
I have the SLP dual cat headers and the only thing I noticed with them are a nagging leak that comes and goes.
I have heard nothing but good things about the AS&M's though.
Good Luck!!

I have had ALL three of these heaers..
SLPs-just plain suck..dont get em!
Macs-Very good header, plug access is awesome(10min job),putting them on is easy,Only drawback is they are only 1 5/8" primaries..
Hooker LTs-Plug access is pretty good, installation is a little more involved but not too difficult,Drivers side header leaks on the slip-tube on most cars,1 3/4"
If your looking for avg power 300-350rwhp I would go with Macs..If your looking for an all out heads/cam/possibly stroker I would go with the Hooker LT's..It all depends on your goals..

I have installed two sets of MAC's, one set on a 93 and a set on a 95. Very easy to install, plug access is ok, #2 is a PITA but that is going to be with any set of headers on these cars. The 93Z picked up 2mph in the 1/8 from the header swap.

I think i found the header i'm gonna get. The FLP headers. They are LT's and the come with everything i need. The Y-pipe high flow cats and i can switch them out with the orp's. They also come ceramic coated. They are pretty expensive though. But the as&m's with all the stuff i need will be around the same. Plus i wll get a better gain from the LT's. Does anybody have them? How was the install and gains from them?
I don't know if you have already purchased the FLP's or not, but I wouldn't. I bought them on the first GP that ever happened for them on this board. They were completely rusted in 3 months. They bounce off everything on the bottom of your car, and for the money, that shouldn't happen. I had to have 4 friends help puch everything to get the cats and pipes to line up. Rip off for 1200 dollars. Worst mistake I ever purchased for my car.
