M6 guys in here

Might be a stupid question but here it goes

what is a sign of a slipping clutch?

I was in the highway on Sat in 5th gear and hit it. The RPMs shot up and it a 2-3 senconds before the motor caught up. Is it slipping or maybe just in need of an Tranny oil change?

The car has 63,xxx with the stock clutch.

Hey Bud, I had to replace my stock clutch after 61,000. Yes your clutch is shot. Get it fixed asap....soon enough you'll be driving around making a corner in second gear and all the sudden......you wont go!

Put E brake on and let clutch out while pressig on gas. If car stalls. Clutch ok. If car doesn't stall, clutch bad.JMHO

Just depends on the condition. If you have the money, now is the right time to change it. The stock flywheel can only be milled a small amount.

Your clutch is history and get your flywheel resurfaced ($25-35).

I agree....it just gets resurfaced...not that much but if you take it to get it done by someone...dont be surprised if it cost 900 bucks. My last clutch I got a friend to do it at his shop...not a dealership and it cost 600 for the clutch pressure plate throw out bearing and the rest was labor and resurfacing.

I have to agree, your clutch is toast. My Trans Am is sitting in storage with a burnt clutch, hopefully it'll hold long enough to get it to my house. I only have 50k on the clock, too. I would recommend doing it yourself, its not too tough. There are a few write-ups I've seen on the web to help you out.

My clutch slipped one day getting onto the highway, this was in early spring last year. I thought i'd have to replace the clutch soon but I went the rest of last year without it ever slipping again. I had about 70K on it. 77K on it now, never another instance of slippage. Maybe there was moisture or something???

no, you don't have to get a new flywheel - although if this is your first time changing the clutch, its a good idea to get it resurfaced, its reasonaly cheap. Also, make sure you get a new pilot bearing. I had to do 2 clutch installs because I forgot to get a cheap $7 part (pilot bearing) the first time.

Interesting story here - when I bought my slp clutch/pressure plate/pilot bearing, I asked AAMCO transmissions how much they would do it for. THey said they couldn't give me an exact price, which was BS - they "ballparked" me $600.

So I called pep boys, and they said $380, but they didn't resurface flywheels. Also, if I dropped the car off on thursday, I wouldn't be able to pick it up until tuesday. So I said "no thanks".

I took it to a hole in the wall shop here in Berkeley, called "Clutch mart". They only wanted $220 to install my clutch/pressure plate, PLUS, they resurfaced my flywheel for only $50 more.

And on top of all that, I dropped off the car at 10am, and they called me on my cell phone at 1pm saying my car was ready to be picked up. And it drove great, and the clutch made the car feel new.

So... yeah...
