it is in the 30's and 40's recently and getting my tranny into 1st or reverse is a bitch. just started recently and i was wondering if the cold had any bearing on this and what i could do to fix it

Mine used to do that too. Especially reverse.
I had to shift it into 3rd and 4th a couple of times until it would finally go into reverse.

Don't think there's much you can do besides replacing the fluid. If you do replace it, get some Honda ATF. I've heard a lot of good things about it.
