lt's or shorties?
Re: lt's or shorties?
are there any companys that make y pipes for mid length headers. this subject, is a pain in the a$$. ill just tell you guys how i drive the car and maby you guys camn help me make a decision based on that. i mainly like to cruiz, drive on the highway, windy roads, stuff like that. Stoplight drag races.
and from time to time i go to the track. im starting to stray more tward shorties, but the mid lengths sound intresting. is there really that much of a power diffrence between shorties and lt's?

Must be something wrong with the people you have spoken to cars. I felt a huge increase down low as well as up top. I had to get nittos after the LT's because I couldn't get traction from all the low end power I gained. That statement is 100% false IMO.

Re: lt's or shorties?
i think for what i want, im gunna go with shorties, i want the car to be an all around performer. has any one switched there 96-97 to a single cat setup, i heard that the shorties for the dual cats give very little power gains.

Yes, I converted my dual cat setup to a single cat setup. I'm running MAC midlength headers, with a '94-'95 style Hooker catback. The only other engine mod I have is a CAI, and I'm about 35 rwhp more than stock right now. My dyno is in my sig. That's with the MAC midlength, a CAT still in place(robbing me of about 5 rwhp), Hooker catback, and CAI.

Erm more quotes from that article:
"By 4,400 rpm, the smaller headers were making as much as 33 lb-ft more torque than the larger headers. Then by 5,600 up through 6,600, the larger headers took over and made as much as 26 more horsepower at 6,600 rpm."

Re: lt's or shorties?
I have a friend with a 99 Z28. He installed Longtubes and told me that he thought they slowed him down. The reason for this is because it took away tourqe from the low end and boosted his top end. He has time slips to prove this.
As for me, i go for the edge of performance. Longtubes will give you more power. I have them installed in my current rebuild, and got them off ebay for a hell of a deal. 200 bucks! Hookers! They go for 350-600!
Anyways, you can always get by that emission crap by having the same guys that are going to bend your y pipe (i'm doing 3 " all the way so i am still looking for someone that can bend 3") weld on an empty cat shell. I am not doing that unless i get stopped my first time through emissions. Til then, all open!

Yea, that's right. Shorties make more power than LTs up top given the same primary tube size. If the shorties had the same primary tube size as the "big" headers, they would out power them up top too. It's very simple.
I'm glad my article helped.

Re: lt's or shorties?
A 1 7/8ths on a stock like motor is pretty obviously silly, drop the pri size to 1 3/4 and watch your torque come back. Merge collectors are in a completely different category, add merge collectors to the longtubes and the numbers would be silly.

I couldn't agree more. Headers aren't just to reduce backpressure, they help draw the intake charge in during overlap. A primary tube of 1 7/8's wouldn't be good at all except maybe on a super-speedway car where you don't lift off of the throttle. Merge collectors help low end torque because it makes a fork in the road for revesion pulses. Reversion is a big enemy of low speed power because it has time to make it back up the exhaust and disrupt the overlap scavenging affect. Just like overcamming, you can over-exhaust too.
