Lt4 hotcam vs. aftermarket cams like comp
I am currently rebuilding my top end on my 95 camaro with the lt1. I am going with 1.6 roller rockers and comp behive springs. I think I will go with stock lifters unless someone knows something I don't. The lt1 lifters stock are some of the beefest I've seen. And some decent push rods. My question concerns the cam. I am going to replace the cam and my choices are........

I have not done much with the lt1 motors and I was curious as to which has better results. I am looking to spray a 100 shot and want a decent cam to run. I have heard the lt4 hotcam is better than the comp in the regard to tunning. A friend told me it is a mild cam that works wonders. The difference in price is only about 50 bucks. What would you go with???? Any knowladge or opinions are greatly appreciated.,

Without a lot of detail as to what your plans are for the engine, I'd definitely use the XFI 466. It has some of the latest is ramp technology which results in more valve lift (area under the curve) than the HotCam does while, at the same time keeps the duration on the shorter side. That improves low end torque and will make the car much more fun to drive.
For a 383, 388 or 396, the 467 cam would be my choice. I feel it's a little too long in duration (2 cam sizes up from the 466) for a 350 and is best for a larger displacement engine.
There won't be any difficulties in tuning the 466 since it's on 113 LSA and doesn't have excessive over-lap. The .050 duration is about the same as the HotCam, but has more aggressive ramps.
Of course, many prefer to over-cam their engines, so their opinions will differ. These are just mine.

that was a hell of a response....thank you. I plan on going 383 once the bottom gives out. I was just going to upgrade what i could with out taking the heads off. any other suggestions......??? I appreciate any ideas.....I was going to add a 2400 stall in a few weeks.....Does that change any of your minds on which cam i should run....I was thinking the 467....with the stall would be better..but i'm no expert by far....This site is a hell of a knowledge pool.....

it would be in youre best interests to listen to jake he really know his stuff. i have a 467 in a 355 and its better suited in a stroker. the 466 would be a better choice on a stock lt1 headed engine.
I'd think most would rather shift to LS7 lifters. Stocks may look great but a lot of people certainly seem to get ticks from them (me included on a 72k motor). The regular LS7's (there is a race version and regular version) cost less and might hold up better. I am switching to those next spring to get rid of ticking.
You may also want to go with hardened push rods (comp cams), guide plates (GM), and 7/16 studs (comp cams not afr because those are too tall) to get a few hundred more safe revs out of it.

thanks everyone...trust me i have already taken what jake said to heart. I see that he is running a comp cam in his corvette and he seems very knowledgable in the field. I was wondering if the stall makes any difference. And also I didn't know that you could use ls1 lifters in and lt1 motor.......keep the ideas coming
LS7 lifters are also a lot cheaper than stock lt1 lifters. I think the cup is a fraction lower but I've heard they still work with stock push rods.
You definetly need to pick a stall that goes with the cam or a cam that goes with the rpm that you don't mind running a stall. Depending on your gearing you certainly want it locked up when running at highway speeds or esle your gas mileage will suffer.

i don't remember the part number off hand but in my vette i am using an ls motors lifter. i don't know what he is talking about with the lt1 lifters issues, i have bought several sets before the ls1/7 lifters came out with zero issues. again i too am running the same cam as jake but i have gm lt4 heads not afrs and only a 355. i had a 2300 stall in the car and it was a turd, it really woke it up with a larger stall and the larger the stall the sooner you will want it to lock up.. stock is 45mph but you may want to have it closer to 35mph. the car will have plenty of power to cruise locked up at that speed.

If you do purchase a converter, you need no less than a quality 2800. My Vig. 2800 was very nice and so is the Yank SS3600 I have now. Both converters with the 3.73 gears drive almost like stock. In fact I will be sending my 3600 back to have it restalled to a 4000.
ok....I do think all this is good info...I'm not a beginer in this field but my knowledge on lt1s isn't what it needs to be. You can always learn new things. I appreciate all the knowledge shared and I would love to hear any other suggestions....like better cam choices than those I listed.....it is ment to be a mild street car on a small shot of nitrous....
Wait! Your going to change the cam but not do the heads? Are you going to at least do headers? If no on all the above maybe you should just switch to 1.6 rockers, springs, 100 shot, and whatever they suggest for stall. That would save you a ton of work and give you something to play with. A big cam now would be horrible with stock stuff and a small cam wouldn't work that well if you go 383 later.
