Lt4 dyno #'s
Lt4 dyno #'s
I don't see many stock lt4 heads cam only dyno #s. Does anybody have any experience using as cast heads with something else besides the hotcam(503 for example)? I looked on the Grandregistry website but there isn't a lot of information there. I was playing with a bunch of engine combo ideas and found that a longblock lt4 can be bought for $3100. That doesn't seem like a bad deal considering it comes with lt4 heads & springs, new lifters, roller timing chain, roller rockers, and composite valve covers. By the time I do this the Edelbrock intake should be out so that shouldn't be a problem. I know some are going to say money can be spent better elsewhere but I am considering the fact that I can still sell my engine.

An LT4 long block for $3100! I'd grab that motor. Seems like a great price if it's a real and true GM LT4. If you do buy it sometime later you can always port the heads and or try a different cam.
I think a 350LT1 with the LT4 hot cam and bone stock LT4 heads can make 350 rwhp more or less. A very good starting point. Lots of potential too.

PS: add edit: forgot to add, I did have a bone stock LT4 head and GM 846 cam combo on a 383LT1 and it made pretty good power at right around 350 rwhp going by 1/4 mile trap and weight and gut experience. I have those same heads now with a pocket port and no runner porting and 2.02" intake valves and they made 400 rwhp on a 383LT1 with a mild Crane street solid roller cam. I compare them to my big $$$$ set of TFS LT1 heads fully ported by Chapman Racing Heads and I think my GM LT4's perform almost as well as the Chapmans (they just don't have as much deck thickness).

"An LT4 long block for $3100! I'd grab that motor." Thats what I was thinking! I thought about maybe porting them and keeping the stock valves. I also have an Impala but with a T56. I could build a stroker but I love being able to rev. With the lt4 motor I should safely be able to rev to 6600 rpm considering the stock redline is 6300rpm. Anybody else?
Re: Lt4 dyno #'s
I wasn't thinking about using the hotcam but I appreciate your response. I also haven't seen many ported lt4 head dynos. Please post if you have any experience with them. BTW I have used the search.
Re: Lt4 dyno #'s
Hot Cam wont make power @ 6,600 LOL. Also that 350hp - 400hp on a 383 is kinda low with those heads. I make that now untuned with stock injectors/fuel pump and 360 ci tune on my 388ci LT1.

It was a very small solid roller with an eye for max torque. Remember, Karl is running an Impala that needs some muscle. It was I believe a 236/242 Crane street roller, and he made 405 at the wheels with the converter unlocked. I do have to chuckle a bit though when he says the Chapman heads are just a step above. They are really workin' for him that's for sure.

Chrism400, I believe I met you at Mike Harris' house. I was getting gears installed in my 96 Impala with the T56. I see you finally got your setup running well. BTW, what is your vehicle weight?
Re: Lt4 dyno #'s
If you want the most of of your LT1 go LT4, like most of the guys putting down larger numbers do. The LT4 heads are superior to the LT1 heads when you get down to the charts. There's not much difference between the LT4 and LT1 blocks I think except 4bolts if I remember correctly. So if you do get it for $3,100 just know it would be for rareity and bragging rights.
Re: Lt4 dyno #'s
The way I see it I could buy the lt4 long block and still sell my stock engine. From my understanding the lt4 block is superior to the lt1 block in more ways than just the 4 bolt mains. Better pistons, rings, crank, etc.http://www.grandsportregistry.com/lt1vslt4.htm. Heck, it would cost me just under $2000 just to rebuild my stock bottom end. Now I can get a brand new engine, the better timing chain, roller rockers, and heads. I can still sell my engine, port the lt4 heads, get a better cam and springs, and still come out cheaper than rebuilding my engine.
