lt4 cam vs lt1 cam?

How can you tell the physical difference between the lt4 hotcam and the stock lt1 cam by looking at it or part #. Only found one number on it 6## something. Need help identifying the cam. Any help would be great. Thanks.

i dont think you will be able to tell the two apart by looking at them. you could take it to a shop that can actually check the specs and find out that way.

That's a toughone. The LT4 hot cam has a bit less lobe separation (more overlap), and slightly higher lobes. Without having them side by side though, you'd either need to mic the lobes for net lift and compare it to spec... or be able to figure out the stamping.

Here's the specs on the LT4 Hot Cam, LT4 cam, several LT1 cams, and the ZZ4 cames used by GM (as well as some popular aftermarket cams): http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/badrap/lt4.html

Interesting note is that the GM-issued LT4 cam was actually smaller than the LT1 cams used. The increased valve lift from an LT4 engine is from the 1.6:1 roller rockers.

The cam specs for the lt1 are wrong arent they? The lt1 cam spec for the 94-95 stock intake duration can not be 230. Isnt it more like 202. http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/ar99928.htm

There should be numbers on one side of the cam. The numbers wont make any sense to you but the LT4 cam should have 586 which is the last 3 numbers of the part number printed on it.

Can anybody verify that the LT4 HOT cam has the 586 number stamped into the end of it? We're trying to figure out what this cam is with 630 stamped into it. Anybody have a HOT cam sitting around they can check?

Anybody with an LT1 cam, can you tell us what is stamped into the end of your cam. We're still trying to identify this cam. Thanks.

Re: lt4 cam vs lt1 cam?

I have the same cam with "630" stamped on the end. Came from a 1990 transam small block.....car was mildly modified by someone and then scrapped so no idea from there. Hoping someone can confirm anything.

Re: lt4 cam vs lt1 cam?

Guys,

You are looking in the wrong spot. Check close to the front of the cam just after the number one journal. It is stamped into the cam. For some reason, GM blanks out 3 of the numbers...but it is on the cam. Here is a shot of my 1996 stock LT1 cam.

Edit...well I thought it was the correct number....the last three match up but not sure on the 15 at the first part.
