LT1 Water Pump New or Reman?

Need the voice of experience here...

I'm replacing my opti and waterpump as soon as they get here... I'm ordering tomorrow. GM new waterpump is cashy!!!

Autozone reman units are much less cashy, but I don't want crap on my engine.

Has anybody had trouble with aftermarket reman water pumps? Is it worth the extra cash to get a GM new unit?

I've replaced 6,358 'Old' SBC waterpumps, and it was basically luck of the draw... They either last forever or they last a month. New or used. Never put one on an LT1 before...

Any words of wisdom???

I bought a new Autozone pump for my 96 Z28, kept the old one in the box. Once the pump went out on my 95 TA, since the new pump is lifetime warranty, it didnt cost me anything to replace the pump on the TA. Moral: Might be worth it in the long run to get the lifetime warranty New pump from Autozone.

I put a reman on my car and I don't appear to have any troubles at the moment. I put it on about 6-7 months ago.

Bought reman from NAPA.

Much cheaper, 1 year warranty, and have had no problems.

My local dealer quoted me over $250 for a new GM pump!!!

Sounds like the remans are good stuff so far. I'll definitely get the lifetime warranty. How long does it take to change only the waterpump? That's more of an issue for me than the cost of the pump... The Lifetime Warranty doesn't cover labor!!!

Water Pump

Well I am a little rusty on turning wrenches and this was the first I turned on my LT1 Impala. But I think it took me about 2 hours. Just remember to get all the air pump bolts that was the hardest thing. My impala has electric fans not sure about yours so just remove the belt and air pump and hoses. No big deal.

Make sure that you dont get any antifreeze at all on your opti, you dont want that going out on you as well. If you can drain your block, do that, as well as the radiator of course. I used an old towel to keep coolant off the opti. Not too difficult of a task.

I'm replacing the Opti too, so just out of spite I may let the coolant douse it as I remove the water pump!!!

No experience with the remanufactured one but I just had to replace mine. When I went to AutoZone the reman was like $50. The new one was a little over $100. I asked the AutoZone dude what he thought and out of the corner of his mouth he said "you don't want the reman one". So, I spent the extra $$$ and just got the new one. Not saying the reman one wouldn't have worked fine but the local AuzoZone guy didn't have a lot of faith in it

new

I removed an AZ reman pump off my C4 last month. It was on its way out and I didn't realize it until the need to remove it for opti replacement. Glad I found out before it left me stranded. half of the ball bearings in the back had fallen out and it made a grinding noise when spinning it by hand. Was not leaking as far as I could see.
needless to say I ordered the new GM unit for $140. the reman had less than 20K miles on it.

I got a remanufactured one. The metal pipe (which connects to the rubber hose) slipped out of the pump (the hose was still clamped onto the pipe). I used one of those weld compounds (cant remember what it was called) and hammered the pipe back in, never had a prob since (1yr ago)

I had a problem with a remanufactured from Napa. The propeller spun on the shaft. It was on warranty and got another one and have no problems with it.
