LT1 vs. LS1... here we go again

Sorta like Honda's braging about beating a Stock Mustang.
If I had the money I'd take an LS1 all black wiht T-Tops

I resent that.
Well, unless you get a Firebird, your car is going to be ugly. As far as the motor, it really doesn't take much to equal an LS1. Yes, change the cam, and have some work done on your heads. You'll be faster than an LS1, and at half the cost. Although the LS1 is an "all new" design, it's still an OHV 90 degree V-8 w/ 2valves per cylinder. The majic is in the light weight drivetrain with better stock cam specs, and better flowing stock head castings. All this can easily be surpassed in your LT1. Oh yeah, and check pricing on stroker packages, etc. That'll surely scare you from an LS1.
I'm not saying that I don't have respect for the LS1, they are great engines, but I'm not sold on the hype. And I would disagree that most LT1 owners don't have an LS1 just because they can't afford one.
This is all just IMHO, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who will disagree.

I think the LT1 engine looks better, but it all comes down to preference. I can't understand why people argue over this subject, in a few years GM will have a new and improved engine, hopefully with some new tech like DOD, that will put all previous engines to shame. Does it really matter that an LS1 has more power stock, I guess it depends on how much power you really want, I myself want 600 fwhp and in either case both engines will need some serious modes to produce that kind of power. So for me, I choose the cheaper engine to build, people seem to forget this little fact. I've built a few Buick engines and people say to me, "oh thats so stupid its so much more money than a chevy" Well LS1s are the same thing, very costly! Plus the insurance on the newer car is going to cost you. Also don't forget the LS1 comes stock with a bigger cam, better exhaust manifolds, and most importantly better flowing heads. I have seen posts saying a better comparision would be between the LS1 and LT4, I couldn't agree more. Obviously each new engine is going to be better, at least I would hope so, and as I said before the LS1 will have its day when GM comes out with something superior to it. as far as problems go, any engine will have them, there are none that are perfect, my LT1 hasn't had any problems, except the waterpump and now the heater core. My waterpump was gushing water out that weep hole for many thousand miles (about 10) and its still going strong. My only beef with this engine, is the timing chain issue having to use an electric pump to run a double roller, I suspect the LS1 is the same way. You mentioned about the cams in LS1 putting LT1 cam changes to shame, well of course they will put out more power cause they have 240-250 cfm stock compared to our 210-215 stock flowing heads More people are looking into different type heads to use on the LT1 like the post about Brodix heads(I think thats the ones) these heads flowed extremely well and would kill any LS1
I wish I had an LS1 for the simple fact it comes in a new body. If I had the money I would drop a stroker 404 in my Camaro right now but alas it would cost $8000 or more. The SS concept and possibly a Camaro (pray to the car gods) would come out later with 600hp in the SS concept and maybe more in the Camaro. These new engines should rock the face off any "new look" Mustangs. Displacement On Demand is the future of engines and I sure as hell wish I had one of those Cadillac V16 engines in my car right now.
I could have easily bought an LS1.The only reason I didnt is because of that fugly front end,I just cant seem to like that gaping mouth and bubble eyes looking at you.The 93-97.s look much classier. My opinion.
Guess I could have went with a Pontiac.but had my heart set on a Z.

These threads go nowhere. Sounds like you wanted an LS1 in the first place. You should have bought one so you would be happy.
You also should do a bunch more research so you know what the differences in the engines are. The LS1 being all aluminum had very little to do with it making more horsepower. The engine is a totally different design from the LT1.

Perhaps I should clarify. I realize that the increased horsepower in the LS1 is not due to the fact that it is aluminum. I would attribute most of that to the LS1 head/cam. I noted this in a previous post. I was attracted to the idea of an all iron LT1 (before I realized the heads are alum) because I was under the assumption (please, Shoebox, correct me if I'm wrong here) that it had the potential to be more durable than an alum block/heads.
That way, it could take more of a beating if I ever installed SC/N02. I also acknowledge that there are many design differences between the LS1/LT1. And, you are right, this thread is going nowhere. A LOT of threads on this board go nowhere. But, I am appreciative of the feedback. Also thanks to GREGG 97Z for pointing out some of common LS1 problems. I was aware of the piston slap issue, but not some of the others. Please excuse a rookie for his knowledge, or lack thereof. Thanks, guys.
I love my 93Z. I really like the front end much better than the 98's & up, they look too bulky...
It's always about opinion. Yes, I've had problems with my LT1, two Optif#$k's, which also means two waterpumps, A/C replaced, head bolts at the rear of the engine SNAPPED OFF ON BOTH SIDES, yada yada yada...I figure a lot of this stuff is because it has over 165,000 hard driven miles on it, so the minor heartaches from time to time is worth it.
I love the 93-97 4th gens, I love the power, handling, the looks, that's all that matters.

The long and short of it is-
The LS1 is putting a HURTING on an LT1 stock for stock. There are a billion freaking variables that come into play so comparing modded Lt1 to a modded LS1 is pointless. all things being equal the LS1 is better. But all things aren't equal. Money for example.
The there is the appearance.
A completely pointless thread. Stop bickering, get Lt4 heads and intake and move on with life. The LS1 has many structural advantages which you will not overcome in the LT1.
a "balanced" firing order, aluminium block, 15* heads, individual coil packs..... the list goes on and on.

im a college kid on a budget, unfortunately, maybe its just my luck, but when it rains it pours i've noticed..power steering, plugs/wires/ opti, ac compressor the list goes on and on, but when its running right she sticks right there with ls1s, from a stop i usually put it to them (assuming they are stock) my car managed an 8.4 in the 1/8 before my csi electric waterpump and my newest weight reduction, and to me thats somewhat impressive
