LT1 stock horsepower question
LT1 stock horsepower question
Hi everyone
I've read in several places that GM underrated the horsepower on the LT1 engines, as they have for many engines in the past.
Does anyone have any idea what the STOCK horsepower (at the wheels or net, doesn't matter) on a 1995 Camaro z28 would be?
It's listed as 275, but I wanted to know if anyone has an idea as to the "real" number.
Thanks a lot. I'm SOOOO glad to be out of the import, rice burner scene.

I have a mag. put out by Super Chevy testing a 96 LT1 rated by the factory at 285 HP and it showed 220 HP at the rear wheels. Just FYI the LS1 they tested in a 98 TA which was rated at 305 HP by the factory put out 277 HP at the rear wheels which they concluded was underated by the factory by 40 HP. If you want a copy let me know I'll e mail it to you and welcome to the message board, it's nice to have a new member.
Not sure what math class most of these guys attended but the loss most publications use is 20% from crank to wheels. Since no one here has a bone stock car WITH chassis dyno numbers to back it up then you have to conclude on the side of slopoke. Notice they tested the engine with 10 more HP (285 HP) and got 220 HP at the rear wheels. This then means that the 95 LT1 with 275 at the crank (hopefully) puts out at most, about 220 HP at the wheels NOT 250 HP.
And welcome zapper to the board and congrats on your new Z. I hope it gives you long, problem free service.

might want to do some research before insulting everyone...not sure where your getting that 20% number but that is quite generic and probably refers to automatic tranny cars anyway, not to mention the thousands of variables that would go into this test. Here's an example: my 96 T/A A4 put out 225RWHP with a CAI and dynomax muffler. This was on a decently hot/humid day on a Mustang dyno which read quite a bit lower than your average dynojet...from the Mustang dyno flywheel calculation numbers my car put out 305 at the engine, which using your 20% figures gives me 244RWHP on this otherwise crappy day which was probably worth another 10 rwhp...so are you saying that the CAI and muffler gave me 35RWHP over stock??...do you see how many variables can some into play here?Check around, most people with M6 trannys have been putting close to 250rwhp stock to the dyno.
If it's an A4, I'd say 220 RWHP stock--if it's an M6, I'd say 245-250 RWHP stock. From what I've seen on the dyno, there's around a 25-30 (RWHP) difference in the A4 vs M6. Always expect to hit the low side--too many people put their car on the dyno and come away disappointed.
