well here is a nice little tip to do either if you get a lt1-lt4-or auto zone starter. Wrap it in some header wrap. This helps from getting heat soaked.

Actually i just went through this with my car. I bought a LT4 starter and it didn't work, not sure why. It sounded like the soleniod was engaging but the teeth didn't line up or something. Whatever it was I had to run out and get a LT1 starter, which I think is actually lighter anyways. Plus the LT4 starter is bigger and wouldn't slip in without me dropping part of the exhaust. The new stock starter works fine, and spins pretty smooth and fast actually. Alot different from a stock 84k starter.

Ok I'am confused. Ive seen pictures of a LT1 and LT4 starter side by side and the LT4 one was smaller so I don't see why it wouldn't fit? I'd get the LT4, its cheaper too
