LT1 removal

Hey, i need to rebuild my tranny and im curious.. is it easy to pull engine/tranny combo in a 4th gen? mines a 97 and im curious, because i do have a couple oil leaks, quite a few miles on my car, 160k, and i figured maybe i could pull everything and fix my oil leaks etc, while i wait for my tranny to get back from the shop? maybe clean injectors and i dunno anything else i can think of? im just curious if its easy or not, if not ill just drop the tranny and get it fixed and just bolt it back in... but if i did remove motor it would make my headers easier to install also.. right? Thanks guys you all always help i love this place..

If you have extensions, universal sockets and an impact, tranny removal alone is very easy. Just be sure you can get the car up high enough and have one of your buddy's help you. Just take the driveshaft out, brace under the tranny, and undo the bellhousing bolts, jack up the tranny, and slide it out. Don't forget to unbolt the shifter.

Be very careful taking out a T56. (if you have a T56) This transmission is HEAVY! I would recommend two extra friends or more, just to be safe. If you drop this tranny on yourself, be ready for 911, ambulance, and hospital bills. A friend of mine who owns a shop, and myself pulled the T56 out of my Camaro about 2 months ago. He was pissed at me afterwards, because the tranny was so heavy. I told him it was heavy! I have a cop buddy who used to be a mechanic at a Pontiac dealer back in the LT1 days. He said they would usually have 3-4 guys, when pulling a T56, to avoid injury. BE SAFE! This isn't a Honda tranny!

I pulled an LT1 out of a 4th gen Camaro once, out the top. I really screwed up the cowl panel BAD! My buddy who was a Pontiac mechanic told me I was an idiot! He said this motor isn't supposed to come out the top. ???????? He said at the dealer, with the car on a lift, they would unbolt the cross member under the engine while the car was on the ground. (I'm not sure how to do this) He said they would then lift the car off the motor, and slide it out.

This is what I was told, so I don't know for sure. I doubt anything, anyone tells me, unless I have seen it with my own eyes.

Just trying to help. GOOD LUCK!!

I believe you can take out the tranny and engine as one. Get the Happy Hooker from TPIS (~$40) and go at it. I'm going to drop the tranny and then yank the engine out the top using the HH.

I suggest you do a search on engine removal. Lots of posts going into great detail of the advantages of pulling from the top or bottom. There also links to great photos.

Go from the bottom. You will thank yourself later. My friend and I had the engine and trans on the ground in less than 90 minutes, and we had never done it before. Now we can drop it in an hour or less.

trans can come out by its self no problem... took one out and put one in, in a day.

if your going to pull the motor it is easier to drop everything out the bottom!!

Tranny

Go rent you a tranny jack and pull it out the bottom. Don't pull everything,as it is a lot of unnecessary work. Let the engine down after you pull the tranny mount and support it with another jack and you have all the room in the world to pull it. Unbolt and pull the converter with the tranny or you will never get it back in.The next best thing is a jack adaptor and a buddy, just don't let it get off balance and fall on your head and chain it to the jack to keep it from sliding off on your head.Be very careful when moving the jack around also. Not a bad job with a jack about 2 hrs.
