LT1 rebuild question..

hi guys..

l have a 97 formula and it s got 132k miles on it. my engine is ok.. l have no problem with it but l would like to ask, if the l will have too rebuild it soon??

also, for how much would regular street mechanic rebuild my engine?

if l would like to get a little more power, how should rebuild it? is there any speacial rebuld kits which gives u extra performace? and what us the price difference between stock rebuild kit and reformance rebuild kit.?

l cant spend a lot of money right now so l am not gonna get another block. l would like to have my stock block and rebuild it..

thanks

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

stock lt1 not abused have lasted 200,000 miles plus...
you cannot really rebuild a motor and get better performance without new parts, more reliability and surability yes...

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

If it aint broke, don't fix it. As far as a rebuild, the only way you are going to get more power is if you have the heads ported and put a cam in. If you are after some cheap power get a cat back exhaust and a cold air intake. If you have a little more money to spend get a nice set of headers and maybe some gears.

if l put a decent cam

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

A cam with supporting valvetrain components will generally run about $600-700. (taking into account a tune, gaskets, fresh timing set, etc)

Headers vary in price quite a bit, uncoated longtubes are about 300 bucks, + whatever ypipe you want behind it.

Gears w/ install kit are about $300, install prices vary from shop to shop, average $300 for install... if not more.

2400 stall is itty bitty and not worth it IMO.

A cam on a 130k mile engine is a crapshoot.. unless you have money left around for a rebuild in case it does blow, i wouldn't bother.

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

Your best bet for a "cheap" rebuild is to have a respectable machine shop go through the engine, replacing bearings/rings etc..

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

Search is your friend.....

Assuming everything inside is near perfect and you are just doing new bearings, you pull the motor yourself. Probably only a few hundred dollars.

My entire machine shop bill (not including heads) was just over $1k, but thats with the assybly of a complete shortblock, + boring, etc.

Rebuild + mods I have probably $6k in mine.

man,

l would like to make her faster first l do not need rebuild now but if l would like to make her faster, she might not be able to handle the power so l mean l would like to rebuilt the engine before l put anything in it..

so if l take my girl to a shop to make them rebuild it on STOCKBLOCK and add a good cam. how much would it cost me incld. labor?

l really need to know that.. give me some good news man.. l spoent 6k on reapirs on my car so l really do not wanna spends thousands on her anymore..
thanks

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

It's going to be thousands no matter how you look at it.

If you're not willing to do the work yourself it's going to cost a bundle.

I just did a cam swap with a buddy on a member's car, and we charged $600 for the cam swap job, and that's CHEAP.

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

I wouldnt mess with an actual rebuild unless you had experience. But as far as doing a cam swap or just replacing the opti you can look on shoeboxes website and get a step by step guide. If you have a basic knowledge of tools and engines, take your time, and most importantly label EVERYTHING you could probably do it. With a cam comes supporting valvetrain components though, I have never changed out springs so I dont know the degree of difficulty involved with that. But again if you reasearch it and look through the LT1/LT4 rebuild book I don't see why you couldn't do it. Working on your car can be frusterating as hell, but in the end its worth it to say that YOU did it, and you'll save a lot of cash. Where are you located at?

Re: LT1 rebuild question..

if l decide to rebuild by myself, how much would rebuild kit cost me? l would like to get some cylinder heads which would give me a good amount of power..

also l ordered the book and it has been shipped..
