I had someone try and sell me bad castings when I was looking for aluminium cores, there are a lot of them out there, luckily another forum member told me in time that the guy had had massive repeated overheating problems before I sent any money otherwise I would have ended up in your position.
I think we are all sorry to hear you had bad cores, nobody wants to see anyone else with expensive paperweights but now all you have into them is shipping costs not $1000+ worth of machining.
overheated causes them to get soft with a lot of potential problems resulting, if the valve job was aggressively cut maybe they needed new seats which would be a lot of cost and make better condition used castings a better alternative price wise.
If you don't believe them sure you can find a less careful shop willing to work them but don't be suprized if a head gasket goes and then wipes out the bearings with coolant filled oil.

Posts like this make me glad that I was able to get one of the brand new sets of 643 heads on ebay a few months ago. Next time you buy cores try to work something out with the buyer to Guarantee they will be ok.

Spinning a bearing may have been the final death of the motor but if the heads had a valvejob before I would bet one way or another he had overheated it and had the heads reworked a little during that repair and the shop who did that work did not hardness test them so they went back on till the motor died again.
Actually it is possible he had blown a head gasket and the resulting coolant in the oil damaged the bearings and that would cause eventual failure, we have no way of knowing at this point but this is a reasonable guess.

I'm in the middle of putting everything together now, hopefully I'll have some dyno #'s and track #'s in around a month. I still have a few parts I want to get before I put it together. The quality on these heads is amazing though.
