LT1 Oil Questions
LT1 Oil Questions
Ok, 94 Formula Firebird, everyone guesses it takes 5 Quarts of oil, is this correct?
and does anyone know the advantages over certain oils and oil filters? and they wouldnt mind recomending their type?
Same with air filters?

I've always put in Mobil1 Synthetic, with a long Fram filter.
I don't know that you will see "advantages" to using one kind of oil as opposed to another.
Mabye in the longevity of the motor but as far as performance goes, I think not.
Although Royal Purple claims to add "10 Hp"!

NewbiWar: According to my Camaro matince manual the LT1 takes 5.0 quarts of oil.
I use mobil1 supersyn 10w30 right now engine has almost 74k miles. I used the PF1218 AC delco oil filter. its bigger than the stock one. oh and I use 5.5 quarts of oil
I saw once on TNNs power block they ran an LS1 camaro with regular oil and then royal purple on their dyno and they got some extra RWHP with RP....dunno somewhere between 5-10 i believe.

Mobile 1 Synthetic is probably the best common off the shelf synthetic oil.
But RP is better I hear, although I dont know where to get it.
As for filters, a lot of people seem to be devoted to fram (I work at advance auto parts) and fram is not a good brand. The filter element is essentially card board, and it can and does break apart if left on the car too long, not to mention probably doesnt filter very efficiently.
K&N makes a good oil filter, but they are expensive (HP2002 is about $10).
K-Mart aparantly uses the same filter element as the K&N exept it doesnt have an anti-drain valve (which keeps oil in the engine to prevent dry starts) so the K-mart is a good cheap filter.
Also Puroilator Pure one filters are pretty good.

Redline and Amsoil are considerably better, Mobil 1 is good but their 5w30 and 10w30 are too thin, I'd recommend their 0w40 though. German made Castrol 0w30 is the new kid on the block right now which is showing extremely good oil analysis results, I'm using it in my car right now actually, and will have my first set of results in mid October.
my dad has always used the delo oil for all his cars and he perfers that because its higher detergant the most others (i guess because its formulated for desiels)
would this stuff work for my car or not?
