LT1 Oil Problem
LT1 Oil Problem
So I got the car back togeather with the rebuilt motor and I fired it up last night, but only for a few seconds. After I shut it down, I walked away and when I came back the contents of my oil pan were on the ground under the car. I filled the oil Wednesday night and cranked the car over without firing and had no leaks.
My thoughts are that there is a hole somewhere that needs a threaded plug, but I'm running out of places to look. There is oil on the oil filter and just above it, and there is some on the flywheel. The hole on the top of the intake where the oil pressure sensor goes on later model years is plugged, and my oil pressure sender is right above the oil filter on the side of the block. There's another hole on the side of the block just above the filter, but it's a 1/2" bolt thread, not a pipe thread.
Are there any other places to look? Anything on the back side of the block behind the flex plate?
It seems only to happen when the oil pump is pushing hard enough since it did nothing when just cranking.
UPDATE: I just went out and started the car again for a few seconds, and the oil looks to be coming from around the oil filter. The car use to have a factory oil cooler on it that I removed, but I replaced the same parts that everyone else who has done this swap has used, as far as I know.
Now I get to clean up a few quarts of oil and get under the car again. Oh joy.

im sorry to hear that man that sucks. i know its dumb but just make sure the oil filter is tight not too tight just tight enough to stop leaks because you did say it came from the oil filter. or around there. also dont tell me you are putting in synthetic oil in it and it has drained out about 10 quarts?? man that can get expensive and the oil spill i bet is a pain to clean up. from now on before you fix it when your strating it or something put you a drain pan underneath the car to catch all the leaking oil so you wont have to clean up as much cuz i cant imagine cleangin up 5 quarts of oil on the guornd!
Yeah, I'm going to try a new filter. The one that's on there is tight, but no tighter than any other time I've ever put one on.
It may be a tear, but this oil is coming out quickly. Basically everything from my pan is on the ground within seconds. I don't want to start it up again for fear of trashing my brand new bottom end.

I will tell you what it is. Its the oil pressure unit. it might have broke. Mine did had the same problem. Its located right above the filter on 93's and some 94's I can almost guarentee that the problem.
IF you did a rebuild the first thing i would check is up along the back rail where your drivers side head would meet the intake.. right in that area there should be a hex head plug put into it after the rebuild (yanked before a vat job).. I cant recall if we had to yank only the intake to get it back in or if the head has to be removed.. BUT if your shooting oil as fast as you say it probably was not put back in.. I have a pic if you need it but if you look there with an inspection mirror you can tell if its there or not.. found a pic, here you go..
Well, the plug on the top of the block is intact, and the bellhousing and the head are dry, so it's gotta be right around the filter area. The filter is on tight, but it's almost like it's not sealing correctly. Time for a new filter and a closer look.
There is a plug just above the oil filter....did you get that one in and sealed good?
Also make sure you have the correct filter.....dont ask how I know
