lt1 to lt4 frustration

Finished doing the lt1 to lt4 and the car seems to run fine just driven around town. The 94 lt1 is in a 1968 camaro. So the other night I took it out to the track and was amazed when i looked at my time slip....
R/T .613
60' 2.550
330 6.456
1/8 9.620
MPH 77.75
1000 12.621
1/4 14.621
MPH 97.75

Ok even considering if I im not the best driver, but 14.6? I ran the car before when the motor was completly stock and it had a 3.08 open rear end (now i have a 3.73 posi). and it ran a 13.86 @98.94mph with a 2.21 60'.

The car doesnt seem to want to run well at high rpm and starts to sound frothy and not clean. Also boggs alittle bit at low rpm and if throttle is quickly opened hard, it usually will detonate. Anyone have any ideas? I want to take it to a dyno tuner but i dont know of any in the South Florida/Palm Beach area. I Have a set of headers on the way and i am lookin into a new throttle body and maybe injectors.

full flowmaster 2 in. exhaust
lt4 intake
lt4 heads
gasket matched/slightly ported by wilson manifolds
lt4 hotcam
1.6 rr
fastchips reprograming
3.73 posi
6-speed
adj. fuel pressure reg.
b&m short throw sport shifter

Re: lt1 to lt4 frustration

First off, with a 2.55 60' time, I wouldn't even bother looking at the slip any further. You need to get a run with a decent 60' time to really compare.

Having said that, it really sounds to me like your tuning is off. The very first thing I'd do is find a dyno with a wideband O2 and get a couple of runs done. Also, if you have scanner software, or no anyone with it, plug it in while making the dyno runs so you can see what is going on. With good tuning, your setup should put down around 320-330RWHP.

As to tuning, do you mean fastchip or fastchips? Do you have a plug in tuner or did you pull your ECM and ship it somewhere for tuning? Fastchip is Ed Wright and he is very good at tuning. Fastchips, if I remember correctly, is a plug in tuner like the Hyptertech. If you got the fastchips tuner, or any other plug in tuner, DUMP IT!! Plug in tuners don't even work well with stock setups, muth less a cam change. If you shipped your ECM to someone for tuning, you really need to get it on the dyno to see what it's doing. If you need a good tuner, go to www.madz28.com and have him program your ECM for you. It will get you running much better.

If you don't have really bad fuel pressure or tuning, I might suspect that you got the cam gear off one tooth. No way it should bog or detonate.

The ECM was sent off and reprogramed by fastchip. I dont know why the 60 times are so bad but that was as best i could hook up with tire pressure around 25lbs, Anymore they just spin. First gen camaros have no weight in the back end. I am also pretty sure the cam is in right.

I know Ed wright is good but I had a lot of problems with his program. I picked up 30rwhp with LT1 edit on the dyno the first time.

You need to find someone in Your area as you mentioned. You'll be glad you did and probably get the bugs worked out a lot faster.

When I first received my program from him my car had a bad problem at WOT with detonation. I then had Arizona Speed and Marine look at it and send him some readings which fixed it at WOT but I continued to have knock in the summer. I sent it back again and it never was fixed.
My numbers are with stock timing. I will never advise anyone to go with a mail order tuner. You should get that car on a dyno and buy LT1 edit.
