Lt1 to Lt4 converstion

Ok the gloves are coming off, for awhile now i've tied to keep it conseritive with mods so to enjoy driving it. but now the transmission slips and the engine has small oil leaks all over. so with having to pull them anyways i'm goin big this time.

So with some money i have saved up i just purchased a Lt1 to LT4 convertion kit for a 1994 Z/28 with all the goodies, new timing chain, injectors, and MSD distributor.

My question is how hard is it to do this job by myself and a few friends? I've build motors for dirt track bombers, but those were carborated, how much harder is feul injection? and with the bigger injectors that are coming do i need to get a bigger fuel punp? And it it possible to switch from OBD I to OBD II

Any advice would be helpful because the stuff is on its way. thank you to all who help, You can't beat car guys helpin car guys

Plan to be patient. Rushing will only mess you up.

I also suggest taking a LOT of pictures in the first half of the project; removing the engine.

Reason being is that when you are putting things back together and asking yourself: "Where the hell did THIS go?", you'll have pictures to guide you.

Other than that, you can certainly do it.
You'll want to rent, borrow or buy a GOOD torque wrench.

Also, invest in a GOOD set of 4 or more jackstands, if you don't already own a set. You'll be glad you did.

Good luck.

Re: Lt1 to Lt4 converstion

my goals for the motor is to have just some extra ponies to set my car apart from all the z28's in my area. And to give those rice burners an A$$ whippin when needed. i was told that OBD2 is the better of the computers because it some what adapts to new parts and problems, and is easier to tune. Where is a good dependable place to get my computer retuned?

yes go with the OBD-I
and get your LT4 heads ported if you wanna be far beyond other camaro's and rice burners. And a nice cam to go with it.

He may mean the older speed density (93-older) LT1. The MAF systems tolerate more change and are not as sensitive as the speed density systems.

Keep your OBD1, there is nothing to gain there and you'll be wasting your cash and time.
For approx. 1100 you could have the LE1 package (head/cam) and make more HP than the LT4 conversion and save $1000.

Did you buy the LT4 conversion yet or are you so close to buying it, you just say you bought it? If you can, return it and save some cash.Nothing better than making power and doing it cheap!!

Follow that advice. If you can return the setup, i'd do it. If not send the heads off to be ported and get a different cam. I think you'd be much happier.

You'll need to purchase more things then just the heads/cam package... it's a very costly upgrade but god damn I can't wait for mine to be finished... 1 1/2 more weeks!! OMG!! 383 LE3!! 6 Speed!! 11.8:1 CR!!

Re: Lt1 to Lt4 converstion

You also mentioned the MSD distributor, problem is those are just a cap and rotor and while they began taking orders nearly a year ago not a single one has been delivered to the public. You need to do a lot more reading and rethink what you want to buy. On the injectors please say you ordered SVOs as Accels are known garbage and the Holleys are grossly overpriced.
The LT1 is very much like older smallblocks so if you are comfortable with them you will be fine with this. Injection is a lot easier to deal with than a carb once you get to know it, because it can give you substantially more feedback than a carbed engine.

Are you sure? Summit and Jegs have them, and i don't think they'd list them if they weren't even available.

Are you new to the forum? This has been beathen to death more than the fact the LT4 kit is not the ultimate package newbies are lead to believe it is. Everyone keeps posting about how wonderful this friggin "distributor" is and all when it is just a cap and rotor and NONE have made it to the public even though Summit began taking orders last fall, so nobody can say if it is truely even as good as the stock parts much less better. Don't want to believe me do a search. Besides that remeber the aftermarket is about making money if faster cars also result that is nearly accidental and magazines are one giant advertizment RARELY is anything in them of real technical value especially anything with a dyno test of a specific part is just an ad. Magazines start writing articles the big parts warehouses begin taking orders by the hundreds or thousands and the parts are not even independantly tested yet.
