LT1 to LT4 Conversion...Opinions?

Howdy,

I was browsing through the GM High Tech mag today during a commercial, and on the last page of the mag i saw the LT1 to LT4 conversion. Complete "kit" gaskets, heads, hot cam, intake, and whatever else you need. I tried searching but didn't find anything about a complete conversion. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about this? The ad says it makes a 425+hp (im guessing at the fly) but thats still a hell of an improvement at the wheels over stock. I have a fair amount of money saved up to the point where i could pull an $800 bank loan and be able to buy this conversion.

Opinions, facts, etc. are welcome

Thanks,
Dave

Most people would discourage this. For the amount of money it costs to get the LT4 conversion, you can get ported heads and a nice cam and beat the crap out of the LT4 swap. If you search for LT4 conversion on the forums, you will find a few threads about it.

Heads and cam > LT4 conversion.

Heads/Cam all the way.
The only time I would say against that is if you have the money, buy a bigger cam, buy the LT4 heads and manifold and get the ported. That is the only way, but still there are better options.

Ok so don't waste my time with this "conversion" but still take the heads and manifold? My dads friend builds racing engines and he said he could port and match my stock intake and heads for $280 and install them back on for me. It seems like this is a relatively good price...at the same time should i just have him throw a CC306 cam in there and degree it accordingly? I plan to run a 100wet shot from NX this upcoming spring, so i want a nitrous friendly cam for more HP, but at the same time i want a kickass "lope" at idle to intimidate while im cruising.

Thanks for your help again,
Dave

I would say just get your stock heads ported and a cam. Do some research, talk to the guys at cmotorsports about your setup and they will help you chose a came for your ported heads and nitrous.

Cool Re: LT1 to LT4 Conversion...Opinions?

It really depends how far you want to go with the car/motor...for stock cubes stick with the LT1 castings but if u think u will later increase the cubes the extra cc's on an LT4 will only help on a future set up. If money was not an option get a good cam and the LT4heads/intake... by the way, stay away from the 306 it is an old TPI grind and there are many better designs available today that will make more driveable power JMO

Re: LT1 to LT4 Conversion...Opinions?

Well i'd like to push around 425rwhp on the stock displacement. Bores and strokers are way to common anymore and i don't feel like pulling the entire rotating assembly anytime soon to bore it out. Money is an issue...I figure about $550 should get me the port and match job and still leave me with about $290 for a cam kit or sometin. Then im getting another $500 for xmas (im too picky to buy stuff for) so i think im dropping that on a CAI and a 58MM throttle body then nitrous in the early spring once i start work again.
