I was just wondering what is required to do this upgrade, and how much it cost and how long a job like that would take for a newbie at engines

I have the kit on my car. It probably isn't the best bang for the buck setup that you can get. I have been thinking of going with a bigger cam.

As far as the driveability you probably won't find a better setup for driveability.

I wouldn't try doing it by yourself if you haven't done this kind of thing in the past, especially if this car is your daily driver.

A good way to go that would be less expensive would be to use a CC305 or the hot cam and a set of ported stock LT1 heads.

If you still want to do the entire LT4 package, I believe summit sells it now for like $2600 bucks. That's only for the parts. For that price (maybe a little bit more), you could get the cam, have someone port the stock heads and install everything with proper tuning.

LT4 conversion kit at Summit $2200 appox. Everything included except a new timing chain. Labor cost in the metro Detroit area for this job $1500-1000.

I'm glad I don't live in Detroit, mine only cost me $600 to get put on the car, that was with LT's as well. I am however going to start doing the work myself.

It is possible for a newbie to do the LT4 conversion. I'm a good example. Took me about 6 months to complete. That's with 18 weeks waiting for the AFR LT4 heads to come in and putting in about 1-2 hrs after work every other day. It wouldn't have been possible if I didn't do alot of research, ask all the right questions, and getting good advice/tech help from the board (not this board though).

I agree that it is possible for a newbie to do. Just don't get in a hurry and if in doubt get on here and ask some questions. Also some good technical manuals wouldn't hurt either. I have the factory gm service manual to go by when I start doing my own work.

I think your best bang for the buck would be a set of lloyd elliot ported heads (flow beter and cost less than the lt4) you dont need to use the lt4 intake, and your not stuck with the lt4 cam. Daily driveability (i.e. streetability) is a state of mind. Everyone has differant tollerances. We cant tell you what is streetable for YOU. Some people are pansies, and others wear their cars illtemperment as a badge of honor. Theirs guys who drive 11 sec n/a cars to work, and some who are intimidated by anything with more than 200 hp. Your average 12.0 sec N/A LT1 isn't going to drive like a Benz, lol.

I would look away from the HOTcam and at one of the XE Grinds. XE 218/224 is a nice SMALL cam, if thats what you want.
