Lt1 engine question
Lt1 engine question
I'm looking to buy my first car and after awhile of searching around I found a car that I want. A 1994 Z28 350 Camaro that my friend is willing to sell me. However, the engine block is blown and I was wondering where and for how much I could get a new one.
Also, I would be buying it for $1,300 so would it be worth it?

Re: Lt1 engine question
I'd say that means the engine is blown and needs to be repaced.
The KBB Private Party on that car would be around $3000 if the engine was not blown.
A used engine cost around $1000
+you would need several things to install, such as oil, coolant, etc.
Then you will have labor if you don't know how to install it.
You may be able to break even if there is nothing else wrong, but IMO its still too high. If you could do the work yourself, you might be OK.
IMO you would be better off waiting for a running car.

Re: Lt1 engine question
An engine swap is not cheap and might be only one of an array of problems in this non running car. Suppose you go the cheapest route you can (junkyard LT1 with help from the board for install) only to find your 2-3 band is gone in the transmission (or if its a manual, maybe reverse is gone). Maybe you have a death whine in the diff. There are a million things that can be broken or on the way...especially when the car was ran hard enough to tear up the engine. For 2500 you can find an LT1 car that needs a little TLC not a new engine. Even better yet, LS1 cars are coming down in price now too. You can find a high mileage LS1 for around 4-5K now and that is a FAR superior starting point.
Good Luck!

Ditto charliediss...IMO you can find a lot of better deals like he said, which is HIGHLY advisable if ya have little or no experience turnin' wrenches. Have patience and keep askin' around on this site when ya find something ya like. There's a lot of good, knowledgable members on here. Good luck.
