Smile LT1 Carnage 2004 pics!

My Lt1 went kaboom last weekend - not sure of the cause yet. The #4 piston tagged a valve and here's what happened.

#4 piston gone

Trashed cylinder head #1

Trashed cylinder head #2

Valve face and piston leftovers

Just because you're NA doesn't mean you can't trash parts. I'm glad I didn't ruin a high dollar set of AFRs...

Thats crazy Ryan!!
Was that with the GTP-6?
Wonder if when you blew that head gasket it had an effect on that?

Not its time for that stroker

Hey Cody,

I had the heads back on after the gasket R&R. Yes, I was still running the GTP6. The only thing that would make sense is that the heads were milled too much, and with the 1074s the clearance wasn't enough. The heads were supposedly only milled .008. With the 1074s I lost .018" total. I'm not positive on what happened tho.

Budget rebuild this time. No +cubes bling for me .

Sounds like the thinner head gasket was the culprit.

Therrs the head. The valve was broken off at the end of the guide inside the chamber, top of the valve was still locked into the spring. Not one of the parts that broke was recognizable, couldnt tell the difference between the piston, valve, or rod, or pieces of the block, it was all so mangled it looked the same.

Also, the only thing that is reusable from the engine is the pushrods and rockers. Two (500 mile) lifters froze in the bores somehow and flatened the area the roller rides on the cam. Never heard of a hydro roller flattening a cam before!!

Oh well, i was pissed but then shortly after I was happy, cuz look whats comin.

How old were your valve springs? What rpm were you revving to?

I had maybe 5000 on the 986s. I was close to 6000. Shifted out of 4th, into 5th and hit the gas, nothin there, rpms at 0. Rear view mirror, white smoke, damn.

Rod went through the oil pan and broke the oil cooler line, so i lost all my oil and coolant. Maybe god was sending me a message.
