LT1 Balancer puller-need help

Ok, frustration setting in quick. I have a Mac deluxe puller set(big bucks), lots of longer bolts to use. But the right ones are not there. ALSO, the balancer bolts are to big around to go thru the triangle shaped puller itself. So it is useless. How does it come off? Have to fix an opti.

Beautiful, thank you. I got two of them type also, I was just a little questionable about using them, I see the right way there.
Now, I'm reading in another post that this does not have to come off for the opti replacement. Is that so?

Just the pulley needs to come off for opti replacement. The hub can remain on.

The pulley/damper has to come off, but the three prong hub that the pulley bolts to does not. The hub slides over the crank snout and bolts to the end of it.

Before you reinstall the dampener clean up the ID and also the hub. Apply a light coat of anti-seize and it will come off easier should you have to remove it again.

It helps if the crank hub is turned in the right direction too. Just tap the key until the triangle is flat on top.

Re: LT1 Balancer puller-need help

Forgot to mention that. The ears on the hub are not equally spaced. With the mark on the dampener straight up the two ears that are farthest apart will be up also. This will make it easier to remove the opti. There is also a raised casting mark on the hub. When it is lined up with the mark on pulley it's good to bolt on.

HOLY SMOKE! This is unbelievable. I have NEVER had such a pain in the *** part to deal with. I have NEVER had anyone work on my cars before on anything. But I just cannot get the pulley or balancer or whatever off. I have borrowed pullers from 4 different households, still no go. They are all to big or not big enough, not one medium size one that I would need.

I always rent mine from Autozone. It's free. Also, if all else fails, grab the outside of the crank pulley with the claws, instead of the inside. Just be careful because you can break pieces off this way.

Re: LT1 Balancer puller-need help

Its finally off! One round for the house please. It just takes the medium size claw puller which was tough to get. Autozone is a good place for the tools thank you, I tried a 5th household and managed to get the useable one. Thanks guys, geez slow down, ok another round for the house.
Thanks, Darrell

I feel you, this is the biggest POS I have ever worked on. On mine, tow of the ears are bent upwards, so the puller I have can't go on straight. Some genoius that had the car before me, it looks like they used a three jaw but forgot to take out the center bolt. I cannot wait to sell this car. Distributer in the wrong place, optical sensor, what was GM thinking?

Re: LT1 Balancer puller-need help

I just replaced the opti on my car and it wasnt such a pain in the ***, its alot to take off of, tedious and time consuming, but pulling the cooling fans and radiator will sure give alot of needed room and surprisingly they arnt that hard to remove, buy the medium sized 3 jaw puller you need, and then carefully just go to work on it, mine came right off, and if aligned right, theres no reason it shouldnt come off, and timing the opti is a breeeeze, all you do is put the cam dowl pin in the marked slot! I've grown in love for my LT1, even tho it is a pain in the *** to get to alot of things, its a nice running motor and performance is ready in unthinkable potential
