Question Ls1 vs. Lt1

Hey, I just had a question that will probably raise alot of conversation.. I am thinking about buying a 97 SS camaro. I was told that it is much harder to get horsepower gains out of an LT1 than it is an LS1.. How true is this? Should I go with the 96-97 or go ahead and get a 98 with the LS1? thanks

this subject has been beaten to death here, try doing a search "lt1 ls1" you will have days worth of reading material.

basically its about your preference
lt1 is cheaper to work on.

Man, I'd love to have a 96-97 SS car. So much sweater looking, more rare and alot cheaper to buy. Throw in a cam and ported heads and some other goodies and walla, your faster and did I say sweater. It's really up to you. your always going to have two sides. Oh yes, the search button does work.

The LS1's are better stock, most definetely, but its a little cheaper to mod a LT1 than a LS1, but the LS1's are pretty cool.

haha I do have another question actually... I heard the LT1's have an iron block and ls1's have aluminum... How much weight difference is that? and durability difference?... Also I was offered a 96 SS with 15k miles AUTO for $9,900... If it had been 6 spd i would have bought it already... How much difference does that actually make? thanks.. I'll be ready for your reply within seconds

i believe the motor was something like 50-60lbs lighter that the lt1.
drivetrain loss with an auto is 18% average.
drivetrain loss with an Manual is 12% average.

how much are you willign to mod and who much are you willing to pay? also what are your goals with this car. both can make 400rwhp. just depends on how muc money you want to spend. if its looks then go with whatever makes you happy.

Well, I dont have that much of a preference between the body styles... I am mainly intrested in which one will make around 400rwhp the cheapest and easiest..

emmisons legal or not? with the lt1 youd have to go big cam and heads. with a small cam i think the most ive seen is about 380. on a ls1 im not too sure. street or strip use? presonally id get a 97, you get the newer interior, cheaper price tag, cheaper parts.

Emmisions isnt a problem.. I want it to be streetable... But still powerful 350 to 400 rwhp would be suitable. Go with the 97 SS?
